Smriti Mandhana Early Life and Domestic Career

Born on July 18, 1996, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Smriti's family moved to Madhavnagar, Sangli, when she was two. Cricket was a family affair; her father played at the district level, and her elder brother, Shravan, played in Maharashtra state-level tournaments. Watching her brother is what inspired a young Smriti to take up the sport. Interestingly, while the family is right-handed, Smriti bats left-handed, a trait she shares with her brother, reportedly due to their father's fascination with left-handed batsmen.

Her talent was evident early on, as she was fast-tracked into the Maharashtra Under-15 team at the age of nine and the Under-19 team at eleven. A major breakthrough came in October 2013, when she became the first Indian woman to score a double-century in a one-day game, smashing an unbeaten 224 off 150 balls for Maharashtra against Gujarat in the West Zone Under-19 Tournament.

Smriti Mandhana's International Debut and Rise to Stardom

Mandhana made her international debut in 2013, playing a T20I against Bangladesh, followed shortly by her ODI debut. Her Test debut came in 2014 against England, where a crucial half-century in the second innings helped India secure a historic win.

Her breakthrough on the global stage was the 2017 ICC Women's ODI World Cup, where she started with a magnificent 90 against England and followed it up with her second ODI century (106*) against West Indies. Her performances played a key role in India reaching the tournament final for the first time since 2005.

Smriti's elegant yet destructive style has seen her accumulate numerous records, including:

  • Holding the record for the then-fastest ODI century by an Indian woman (a 70-ball ton against Ireland in 2025).
  • Becoming the first Indian woman to score a century in a Day/Night Test (against Australia in 2021).
  • Being the first Indian woman to score a century in all three international formats.

Major Awards and Accolades

Smriti Mandhana's excellence has been repeatedly recognized by the International Cricket Council (ICC):

  • ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year (Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy): She is one of the few players, alongside Ellyse Perry, to win this prestigious award twice, in 2018 and 2021.
  • ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year: Awarded in 2018, 2021, and 2024.
  • She also received the Arjuna Award from the Government of India in 2019.

Franchise Cricket and Captaincy

A trailblazer in franchise cricket, Mandhana was one of the first Indian players to be signed for overseas T20 leagues. She has played in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) for teams like Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder, and in The Hundred for Southern Brave.

A landmark moment in her career came in the Women's Premier League (WPL). She was the most expensive player in the inaugural auction and was appointed the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Under her leadership, RCB made history by winning their maiden WPL title in 2024, a significant achievement that showcased her leadership and batting prowess as she finished the tournament as the second-highest run-scorer.

Legacy and Impact

As the current vice-captain of the Indian national team and a consistent performer at the top of the order, Smriti Mandhana has taken on the mantle as one of the key pillars of Indian women's cricket. Her journey is an inspiration, breaking barriers and setting new benchmarks for attacking, graceful batting. Her ability to combine classical technique with modern power-hitting makes her one of the world's most captivating batters and a charismatic ambassador for the sport.
