Karan Johar Slams Box Office "Self-Booking": The Viral Analogy of a ₹1 Crore Party

Karan Johar Slams Box Office "Self-Booking": The Viral Analogy of a ₹1 Crore Party

Filmmaker and producer Karan Johar has ignited a firestorm of discussion across the film industry with his recent, candid remarks that appear to criticize the controversial practice of "corporate bookings"-the bulk buying of movie tickets by producers themselves to artificially inflate box office collection numbers.

Speaking on a recent podcast, Johar did not mince words, using a sharp analogy to dismiss the tactic as a form of self-deception that ultimately harms the industry's credibility.

"If I give myself ₹1 Crore and celebrate..."

Karan Johar addressed the contentious topic by using a rhetorical question to illustrate the futility of the practice:

"Everybody does what they have to. If I decide to give myself ₹1 crore, and then I celebrate, have a party at night that I have earned ₹1 crore. Am I a fool, or am I an intelligent man? I leave that for you to decide. That is the only answer I have on this," he stated.

He further suggested that if filmmakers are happy spending their own money on this, they should go ahead, but he made it clear that the practice is fundamentally dishonest.

"The industry is defaming itself"

The director-producer went on to rename the much-debated "corporate booking" as "self-booking," asserting that this form of box office manipulation is an internal problem that defames the industry itself.

Self-Booking, Not Corporate:

Johar noted that the term "corporate booking" is often misleading and that the practice is more aptly called "self-booking" or "individual booking."

Agencies Involved:

He also revealed that there are now dedicated agencies whose job is to fill theater seats for a fee, a desperate marketing tactic used to give films "that kickstart energy."

Audience Cares About Quality:

Johar stressed that these artificial boosts do not fool the ultimate judge—the audience. "The audience only looks at whether the film is good or bad," he said, suggesting that manipulated numbers have no bearing on a film's long-term success or failure.

Johar’s viral commentary is significant as it comes from one of Bollywood's most prominent producers, publicly acknowledging a practice that is widely whispered about but rarely confirmed by top industry figures. His statements are seen as a powerful critique of the lack of transparency in reporting box office collections.

Another Industry Concern: Entourages

In the same conversation, Karan Johar also touched upon the issue of actors' excessively large entourages and the resulting inflated production costs. He emphasized his "ethical problem" with the expenses, suggesting that actors who require personal trainers or special dietary needs beyond the film's requirements should cover those costs themselves.

Johar's willingness to speak openly on both box office malpractices and production expenses has made the interview a viral sensation, forcing a much-needed conversation about the inner workings and financial integrity of the Hindi film industry.
