According to Trade analysts the Ash-Hrithik starrer opened to a very poor response with Rs. 3.75 on Friday, its Saturday collections were just Rs. 4.75 crore. The Sunday collections of Guzaarish were marginally higher at Rs. 5.75 crore. This adds up to Rs. 14.25 crore for the whole opening weekend. The total budget of Guzaarish (including promotions) is estimated to be Rs. 75 crore (Rs. 750 million). With such low collections at the boxoffice Guzaarish is set to flop with Monday crash imminent.
Guzaarish opening to a very low response on its opening friday (19th Nov) at the box had sent shock waves in the industry. Though word of mouth on Guzarish was better than the dull Friday opening, its Saturday wasn't much better than Friday. It had a pickup through Saturday evening in select multiplexes after a rather dismal approximate 3 crore all india net opening day (about 4 cr gross) but while it went up in some theaters (ie some multiplexes), it failed to do so at many others. At a theater like Fame multiplex in Highland Park in Calcutta, even its Sunday was not much more than 25%. At the Alka cinema, a single screen in Chindwara on the other hand, it's barely collecting at 5%.
Guzaarish grossed around 14 crore nett over its first weekend. On Sunday places like CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan showed a healthy jump but overall collections remain low. Mumbai and Mysore circuit fared the best. The film will have to do rock steady weekday business to have at least a decent first week. If the film shows industry standard falls it will end up with not more than a 22 crore nett first week.
Smaller centers remained dismissive of the Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai starrer right from Friday itself. In major belts like Uttar Pradesh for example, this Goa set film couldn't even get released in many of the centers. Its Sunday has touched between 5-6 crores at 40-50% occupancies, but again less than Harry Potter on Sunday. Unless a film is reviled, Sunday collections for films are always higher than Friday. So it's the degree and volume of pickup relative to capacity that makes or breaks a 'pickup'. To that extent, Guzarish didn't pick up as needed. Its overall opening weekend is then 12-13 crores net and will be less than Hrithik Roshan's own disaster Kites (with Barbara Mori) and Aishwarya Rai's Raavan (Abhishek Bachchan), both major disasters of the year. It is on around 750 prints in India overall.
Most crucially, advance bookings for the critical Monday don't look promising even in metros. Guzarish appears headed for a Monday crash. The film's budget which was earlier said to be 80 crores was brought down to 60 crore as it came closer to release. Guzaarish overall collections at the box office may not even touch 25-30 crores.
Critically Guzarish has been compared to Sanjay Bhansali's own Black (Amitabh Bachchan-Rani Mukherji) but commercially Bhansali's Black was on a different trajectory. It started well in metros and then picked up even more to come to within 75-80% of the then existing opening week Bombay opening box office record which was Rs. 2.3 cr net at the time], holding rock steady in its week 2 as well, and overall was among the three biggest grossers of 2005, eventually doing well in even a center like Patna where it had started slow.
Overall Top 3 All India grossers of 2010 so far are Dabang, Rajneeti and now Golmaal at 100 crores net. The current All India weekly gross record is over Rs. 110 crores gross and over Rs. 80 crores net. The current Bombay city/suburbs week 1 record is Rs 17 crores net/25 crores gross held by 3 Idiots. Guzarish if it crashes on Monday as expected, will struggle to make that Bombay figure alone from its all of India collections total.
