Rajinikanth Confirms 'Padayappa 2' Titled 'Neelambari' & Original Padayappa to Re-Release in Theatres on Date: December 12 2025

Thalaivar's Ultimate Birthday Gift: Rajinikanth Confirms 'Padayappa' Sequel,  titled 'Neelambari: Padayappa 2. Original Film Padayappa to Re-Release in Theatres on Dec 12th 2025 Coinciding with Rajinikanth's 75th Birthday!

Chennai: On the eve of his 75th birthday, Superstar Rajinikanth has delighted millions of his fans with a double announcement: a theatrical re-release of his 1999 blockbuster 'Padayappa,' followed by the official confirmation of a highly anticipated sequel, tentatively titled 'Neelambari: Padayappa 2.'

The original film, which cemented Rajinikanth's status as an unparalleled mass hero and gave Tamil cinema one of its most iconic antagonists in Neelambari, is set to return to the big screen on December 12th, coinciding with the Superstar's landmark birthday.

In a special 37-minute video released on his social media, Rajinikanth recalled the monumental craze that surrounded the original K. S. Ravikumar-directed film 25 years ago.

“In my 50 years of career, I had never seen women breaking gates to watch a film as they did for Padayappa,” the actor said, emphasizing the film's unmatched fan fervor.

He also revealed the reason the film has been kept away from regular satellite and OTT platforms all these years: "It’s the kind of film that’s meant to be watched in theatres." Fans will now get the chance to witness the film, which also starred Ramya Krishnan, Soundarya, and the late Sivaji Ganesan, on the big screen once again, reportedly in a 4K remastered version.

'Neelambari: Padayappa 2' Confirmed

The biggest takeaway from the announcement was the reveal of a sequel. Rajinikanth shared that the success of recent sequels like 2.0 and the upcoming Jailer 2 prompted him to explore a second installment for the classic.

The title, 'Neelambari: Padayappa 2,' strongly suggests that the story will revolve around Ramya Krishnan's unforgettable antagonist, Neelambari, whose vow of revenge in the original film's climax left a lasting impression on audiences.

"The title will be Neelambari: Padayappa 2. We are discussing the story, and if it comes out well, much like Padayappa, there will be a powerful Neelambari. It will be exciting for the audience, and I’m working on it," Rajinikanth stated.

The star also confirmed that he was the original story writer and producer (under a friend's banner) of the 1999 hit, which he conceptualized after being deeply impressed by the character of Nandini from the novel Ponniyin Selvan.

The double announcement marks a massive celebration for fans as Rajinikanth not only revisits one of the biggest hits of his career but also opens the door to its exciting new chapter.

What's Next for Thalaivar?

The Superstar is currently busy shooting for the highly anticipated sequel, Jailer 2, with director Nelson Dilipkumar. The announcement of Neelambari: Padayappa 2 now adds another thrilling project to his packed schedule.

Are you excited to watch 'Padayappa' back on the big screen, or are you more eager for the details about 'Neelambari: Padayappa 2'?
