"Housefull 5" Movie Review: Delivers on Madcap Comedy, But With Familiar Franchise Foibles

The much-anticipated Housefull 5, directed by Tarun Mansukhani and starring the familiar comedic trio of Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, and Abhishek Bachchan, has landed in theaters, aiming to uphold the franchise's legacy of delivering chaotic, madcap laughter. And for the most part, it stays true to its promise, offering a grand scale and a star-studded ensemble that fans of the series will likely appreciate, albeit with a few bumps along the comedic road.

The plot of Housefull 5 revolves around the demise of billionaire Ranjeet Dobriyal, just shy of his 100th birthday. His cunning stepson devises a plan to determine the rightful heir to Ranjeet's vast fortune, orchestrating a DNA test for three suspected "Jollys", played by Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, and Abhishek Bachchan - aboard a luxurious cruise. This setup, as expected, paves the way for a barrage of misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and over-the-top gags that are the hallmark of the Housefull universe.

The film certainly doesn't shy away from spectacle. Its grand scale is evident in the lavish sets and the vibrant backdrop of the cruise, creating an extravagant canvas for the comedic mayhem. The inclusion of a star-studded cast, featuring not just the lead trio but also other popular faces, adds to the film's appeal, promising a lively ensemble dynamic. As with previous installments, the movie also boasts catchy songs that are sure to get your feet tapping and add to the lighthearted atmosphere.

However, Housefull 5 isn't without its shortcomings. While the franchise is known for its brand of humor, the comedy here is inconsistent, with some jokes landing flat while others elicit genuine laughs. The film's runtime also feels a tad stretched, contributing to moments where the narrative meanders and the pace dips. Furthermore, with such a large ensemble, it's perhaps inevitable that some actors feel underutilized, their comedic talents not fully exploited within the crowded narrative.

Overall, Housefull 5 is a film primarily for the dedicated fans of the Housefull series. If you've enjoyed the previous installments and are looking for a no-holds-barred comedy with a grand backdrop and your favorite stars, it offers a one-time watch. It delivers on the expected brand of chaotic entertainment, even if it doesn't quite redefine the genre.
