Chilling Betrayal: The Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case involving Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi Unravels

Shillong, Meghalaya - What began as a romantic honeymoon in the picturesque hills of Meghalaya for an Indore couple has tragically morphed into a sensational murd*r mystery, with the wife now arrested and accused of orchestrating her husband's d*ath with her alleged lover and hired killers. The case, involving Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, has gripped the nation as police piece together a chilling tale of pre-meditated murd*r.

Raja Raghuvanshi, 26, and Sonam Raghuvanshi, 24, were married on May 11, 2025

Raja Raghuvanshi, 26, and Sonam Raghuvanshi, 24, were married on May 11, 2025, in an arranged marriage in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Nine days later, on May 20, they embarked on their honeymoon to Meghalaya, a trip initially planned for Kashmir but changed due to security concerns.

The couple checked into a guest house in Shillong on May 21 and proceeded to Sohra (Cherrapunji) on May 22. On May 23, they checked out of a homestay in Mawlakhiyat village. It was after this point that they went missing, their rented scooter found abandoned in Sohrarim village on May 24. A multi-state search operation was launched involving police, SDRF, NDRF, and drones.

The grim discovery came on June 2, when Raja Raghuvanshi's dec* mposed body was found in a 100-foot-deep gorge near the Wei Sawdong waterfall. A tattoo on his hand with the name "Raja" helped confirm his identity. The post-mortem report revealed that he had been struck twice on the head with a sharp weapon, confirming hom*c*de. Items found near the body included a machete (dao), a woman's white shirt, medicine, and a damaged mobile phone screen. Raja's gold chain, rings, and wallet were also reported missing.

As investigations deepened, the focus shifted to Sonam, who had been untraceable since Raja's disappearance. Police soon uncovered a sinister plot, alleging that Sonam had an extramarital affair with Raj Kushwaha, a 20-year-old who previously worked in her family's business. It is believed that Sonam and boyfriend Raj Kushwaha conspired to murder Raja.

Police claim that the murder plot was hatched just days after the wedding. Sonam allegedly kept sharing her live location with Raj Kushwaha throughout the trip. Raj, who remained in Indore, is accused of hiring three men – Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Anand Kumar (23) – to carry out the murder. These individuals allegedly traveled to Meghalaya via Guwahati to execute the plan, with the murder weapon likely purchased in Guwahati. A local guide's testimony of seeing the couple with three Hindi-speaking men on May 23 proved to be a crucial lead.

Sonam Raghuvanshi was finally located and apprehended on June 9 at a dhaba in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, over 1,200 km away from the crime scene. She reportedly surrendered after learning of the arrests of her alleged accomplices. Initially, she attempted to mislead police by claiming she had been drugged and kidnapped, but authorities dismissed her story as a "poorly planned" attempt to evade suspicion.

Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan, and Akash Rajput were arrested from Indore and Lalitpur, respectively, while Anand Kurmi was apprehended in Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh. In a bizarre twist, eyewitnesses claim that Raj Kushwaha was seen driving a vehicle to transport people to Raja Raghuvanshi's funeral.

The Meghalaya Police have been granted transit remand for Sonam and the other accused, who are being brought to Shillong for further interrogation and crime scene recreation. Raja's family has expressed disbelief and demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter, questioning Sonam's alleged betrayal and the circumstances surrounding the incident, including claims of missing valuables and a one-way ticket booked for Sonam to Meghalaya.

The case continues to unfold, leaving many questions about the extent of the conspiracy and the motives behind this shocking honeymoon murd*r.
