It is Harry’s second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during which a series of messages on the walls on the school’s corridors warn that the “Chamber of Secrets” has been opened and that the “heir of Slytherin” will kill all pupils who do not come from all-magical families. Harry and friends find security has been tightened because of Sirius Black’s escape. Also Harry meets Professor Remus Lupin, the school’s new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher who agrees to teach Harry the Patronus Charm, a shield against the Dementors.

As the Ministry of Magic refuses to believe the return of the Dark Lord Voldemort, the members appoint bureaucrat Dolores Umbridge as a teacher at the magical school. Harry infiltrates the Ministry only to witness a prophecy and his godfather’s death.

A defensive spell used to conjure an incarnation of the Witch’s or Wizard’s innermost positive emotions to act as a protector.

A dark spell that creates large, blood-oozing gashes on the subject as if "slashed by a sword". Invented by Severus Snape.

» Crucio (KROO-shea-oh, KROO-see-oh )

Inflicts intense pain on the recipient of the curse. This curse is affected by the caster's emotions.

» Expelliarmus (ex-pel-ee-AR-mus)

Used to disarm another wizard, typically by causing the victim's wand to fly out of reach. It can also throw the target backwards when enough power is put into it.

» Confundo (con-FUN-doh)

Causes the victim to become confused and befuddled.

» Wingardium Leviosa (win-GAR-dee-um lev-ee-OH-sa)

Levitates objects.

» Stupefy (STOO-puh-fye)

Stuns victim. If used too forcefully, it will put the victim in an unconscious state.

Blasts object out of the casters path. If used strongly it can destroy or disintegrate the object.
