'We are Family' Movie Review

Okay, WE ARE FAMILY is the official adaptation of Chris Columbus' STEPMOM [1998] and lots of us have already watched this Julia Roberts - Susan Sarandon starrer. Even otherwise, the story of a woman, diagnosed with a terminal illness, entrusting her kids to the 'other woman' before she does the final salute, gives the feeling of deja vu. But WE ARE FAMILY is not a tear-jerker. Sure, it has dollops of emotions, but also integrates the light moments wonderfully in those 12 reels.

In the good old days, in the 1960s and 1970s specifically, well-made family films struck an instant chord with viewers across the spectrum. But with the changing times, the quantum of well-made socials made a rapid decline. WE ARE FAMILY belongs to the Rajshri gharaana and tells the story of a family facing two life-changing developments: The woman of the house is diagnosed with a terminal illness and two, there's a stepmom on the scene. A difficult subject to handle, without doubt.

But debutant director Siddharth P. Malhotra surprises you constantly. Casting the best available talent for two pivotal parts and doing complete justice to their roles is tough. Very tough. But the ease with which he handles the tense moments between the women and also the emotional finale shows he has learnt his lessons well from his peers.

Final word? WE ARE FAMILY is for the family. It is well acted, deftly written, entertaining and broadly appealing drama. Watch it with someone you love!

Maya [Kajol] is the perfect mother. Her life revolves around her three children, Aleya [Aanchal Munjal], Ankush [Nominath Ginsberg] and Anjali [Diya Sonecha]. Despite being divorced from her husband Aman [Arjun Rampal], Maya has ensured that everything runs smoothly in her house, under her watch, and that they continue to remain a happy family unit.

When Aman introduces his girlfriend, Shreya [Kareena Kapoor], a career-oriented woman, the situation takes an unexpected turn. However, Maya is diagnosed with a terminal illness and circumstances bring the two women under the same roof. Can two mothers make a home?

With a plot like this, you expect WE ARE FAMILY to be an out-and-out serious outing. However, the film has its serious moments, but the director ensures that it doesn't come across as a gloomy and serious fare. In fact, the generous dose of light moments in the narrative keeps the drama fluid. There's an inherent sensitivity that the director brings in, which keeps you involved for most parts.

On the flip side, the film tends to stagnate in the middle of the second hour. One expects the story to move forward, but there's not much movement here [thankfully, the film picks up wonderfully towards the penultimate reels]. Also, the music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is a complete letdown. You feel it all the more because Dharma is synonymous with excellent music. The only redeeming track in the enterprise is 'Let's Rock', which is high on energy. S-E-L need to reinvent themselves by experimenting a little more.

Director Siddharth P. Malhotra handles the dramatic portions best. The tense moments between Kajol and Kareena, the confrontation between the two and also the cold stares that they exchange time and again have been captured very well. The gradual transformation in Kajol's looks, from striking and energetic to pale and morose, is also well projected. The finale is the best part of the enterprise and can be best described in one word: Outstanding. However, like I pointed out earlier, the writing could've been tighter towards the second hour.

Mohanan's cinematography is eye-catching and the locales of Australia only enhance the look of the film. Niranjan Iyengar's dialogue are decent at places, but a few lines are amazingly real. The background score [Raju Singh] is first-rate.

WE ARE FAMILY gives the two popular actresses an opportunity to sink their teeth into strongly drawn, juicy, challenging and interesting female roles that move beyond the normal stereotypes. The scene stealer is, without doubt, Kajol. She expresses the gamut of emotions brilliantly and speaks a million words even when silent. This is yet another incredible performance from an actor par excellence. Kareena excels yet again and her sequences with the kids are a delight. In fact, casting Kareena as the stepmom is just right, since she's the only actor who can stand up to Kajol in high-voltage scenes and that's because Kareena is a powerful actor herself. Arjun continues to surprise. ROCK ON, HOUSE FULL, RAAJNEETI and now WE ARE FAMILY indicates the growth of this actor. He handles the emotional moments well too. The kids - all three of them - are superb. In fact, the casting of the kids [done by Shanoo Sharma] is an ace.

On the whole, WE ARE FAMILY is a perfect family film with a good mix of emotions and humour. Plus, a brilliant climax, which will ensure that the film grows with a strong word of mouth. The last film which came close to being a family outing was PAA. Before that, the only quintessential family film was BAGHBAN. WE ARE FAMILY is the kind of film that should work instantly with ladies and when ladies watch such films, they bring their spouses and children along. Recommended!

Sunanda Queen Of My Heart: Shashi Tharoor

The much-hyped Dubai wedding of the Indian parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar took place at a private villa yesterday.

Dressed in a north Indian sherwani, Mr Tharoor, 54, smiled all through the traditional Hindu ceremony.

He and Ms Pushkar, 45, held hands as the priest recited religious verses to them. The couple then read vows to each other, which were translated from Sanskrit to English.

“Now that you have accepted me as your husband, you will be the queen of my heart,” said Mr Tharoor, as the crowd cheered for the couple.

“I shall always make you happy. I shall never separate you from me and I will take care of you.”

The couple were thrown into the media spotlight earlier this year after allegations emerged that Ms Pushkar had received a free stake in the IPL Kochi cricket franchise. This eventually led to Mr Tharoor’s resignation as Indian minister of state for external affairs.

Ms Pushkar was dressed in a red designer wedding sari and covered her head with the sari as she completed the rituals. The Dubai-based entrepreneur appeared thrilled throughout the ceremony and was flanked by her family and friends.

“I shall be with you, shoulder to shoulder, in the ups and downs of life,” she said.

The home of Indian businessman Prakash Bhojwani in Al Safa was converted into the wedding area where the ceremonies were conducted.

“I just want to see this couple happily married and I’m doing my best to ensure that the wedding goes well,” said Mr Bhojwani.

Most guests wore traditional Indian attire. An Indian vegetarian lunch was served for all the guests before the wedding ceremonies began.

Ms Pushkar’s teenage son, Shiv, who studies in Dubai, was also present at the wedding and was seen welcoming guests. Despite rumours before the wedding that the guest list was enormous, only about 70 people attended.

Among the guests was the veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher and Mumbai-socialite couple Adi and Parmeshwar Godrej.

“I was invited for the wedding from both sides; by Sunanda and Tharoor,” said Mr Kher, who sat in the front row to watch the proceedings.

When asked if he thought the marriage would end the controversy surrounding the couple, he said: “Drama is part of everybody’s life, especially if they are public figures. I think they are excited about being together, which is why they are getting married.” Also present at the wedding was Harshad Mehta, the owner of the Indian Premier League franchise IPL Kochi, and one of the key figures in the controversy.

The two married last week, ending months of speculation about their relationship before yesterday’s second ceremony. The first wedding was held at the ancestral home of Mr Tharoor, who hails from the south Indian state of Kerala, and was performed in traditional Kerala style.

The Dubai wedding yesterday was conducted in Kashmiri style. The newlyweds will hold a reception at the same venue tonight. They will then head to Spain for their honeymoon followed by a reception in New Delhi.

SUNANDA, who wore a pink, orange and red shaded sari designed by designer Anjali Chandiramani for her Kashmiri ceremony, told a local magazine that she was learning Malayalam and that her mother- in- law Lily Tharoor, had gifted her a pendant of Lord Shiva as a gift.

She was also accompanied in Dubai by Birmingham based hairstylist Gora Uppal who has previously had celebrity clients like Manisha Koirala and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Tharoor was dressed in a cream sherwani and the event took place on Monday afternoon at the home of the couple’s friend and local businessman Prakash Bhojwani.

The wedding was attended by around 60 guests that included close friends and family.

Among them were Adi and Parmeshwar Godrej and Anupam Kher. Tharoor and Sunanda also read out Sanskrit mantras, albeit in English, for the benefit of the attendees. “ They were smiling all through as they took their pheras,” said a guest at the wedding.

The reception will take place tonight and is expected to be attended by several high profile guests from the UAE as well as from India.

Sangeet Ceremony Pictures of Shashi Tharoor-Sunanda Pushkar From Dubai

The three-day Dubai leg of wedding celebrations for MP Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar, began yesterday (Aug 29 2010). Over 150 guests will come together for the festivities.

The groom and bride arrived in the morning at the villa of their close friend and Dubai-based entrepreneur Prakash Bhojwani, which has been chosen as the venue of the mehendi, sangeet, wedding and reception.

"The mehendi and sangeeth functions were held yesterday (Aug 29th 2010). The wedding will take place at 3 pm on Monday and the reception will be held on Tuesday evening.

The venue of all these functions is Bhojwani's home, which is located very close to the Jumeirah waterfront in Al Safa," said an invitee.

The reception will see around 60 attendees from India, which includes actors Anupam Kher and Boman Irani. Apart from these, invitations have been extended to heads of the Indian diplomatic mission in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, prominent NRIs and some members of the royal family.

"Only close friends will be attending this function. It's a very private affair. The functions were organised mainly by Sunanda's friends as she was keen to have a traditional Kashmiri ceremony. The couple will leave for the Delhi reception soon after the Dubai reception is complete," added the source.

Bridal outfits

Pushkar wore a lavender chiffon sari at her mehendi yesterday and will be wearing a brocade and georgette one for the wedding ceremony. "She's still undecided about what she's going to wear for the reception," said Dubai designer Anjali Chandiramani, who has been working on Pushkar's trousseau for eight months.

The ensemble contains a variety of saris, ranging from simple cotton ones to chiffons and silks.

"The sari she will wear for the lagan is shaded with a border of pure brocade and gota. A traditional blouse adorned with brocade and buti work has been designed to go with it. We have been in touch over the phone but she had faith in me and only saw the ensemble in its entirety last morning. She was absolutely thrilled," said Chandiramani.

Amithab Bachchan Warns Abusive Blogger, Says Anyone Touching His Family 'Will Have To Pay Dearly'

Amitabh Bachchan, who filed a police complaint against an unknown person who had been sending derogatory and abusive messages on his blog and through SMS on his mobile phone, revealed today (August 30) that the police is investigating the matter.

"The Police has been informed of this grave and insidious act and many of the level of commissioner and equal rank who are personal friends have been wanting to seek more information, have been incensed and are in action.

"Soon there shall be a sharing of details, not just in India but in the country of its origin," Bachchan posted on his blog.

Ever since the news was made public yesterday (August 29), the 67-year-old received many supportive messages from friends and well-wishers.

"The media picked up our blog and spread it out into the world of information and now for the entire day there has been a barrage of messages of support, of wanting to catch the culprits and take them to task, of grave indignation and of being incensed by this show of absolute garbage that has been directed towards me," he wrote.

The actor said he will never spare anyone who talks ill about his family.

"There is a limit to which this can be tolerated. I can be a gentleman up to a point. But beyond that I shall stop being one. You go to the level of so much as touching my family and little innocent grand children and you shall have to pay extremely dearly," he posted.

Salman Khan At Delhi During ‘Dabangg’ Promotions

The fans, who had been waiting for him for more than one-and-a-half-hours, burst into cheers the moment Salman walked in with his co-star Sonakshi Sinha and brother Arbaaz Khan, who has produced the film.

There was lots of clapping and cheering in the overcrowded mall when the star stepped on the dais waving and blowing kisses to his fans, but could barely speak due the noise.

"Maine ek mall mein itni bheed kabhi nahi dekhi (I have never seen so many people in a mall). Love you all," a surprised Salman told his fans.

People were seen pushing and jostling each other to get a closer look at the star. When the actor spotted a mother carrying a small child in the maddening crowd, a concerned Salman told the bouncers: "Please take care of the child and the mother."

Then he spotted an old lady patiently waiting for him in the crowd and called her to join him on the stage.

Salman even entertained audiences by performing the song ‘Tere mast mast do nain’ from ‘Dabangg’, which is releasing September 10.

He even distributed the aviators he has worn in the film and the first one to receive this was the little girl in her mother's lap.

Dressed in a shaded lavender-purple sari, getting ready for her mehendi lunch, Sunanda Pushkar is anxious. No wedding jitters here (as she tells us with a laugh, “Shashi and I were married some days ago”). Sunanda’s worried that she’s kept her guests waiting for the lunch happening in her friend Raj Sahni’s penthouse. "I hate to keep people waiting for me," she says.

Shashi Tharoor's Sons Kanishk and Ishaan Welcome Sunanda Amma Into The Family >>

Her husband, politician and author Shashi Tharoor is already at the lunch, so people keep coming up during the interview, asking her to come down soon as well. At one point, Anupam Kher, who’s an old friend of Sunanda’s, walks in, and they chat in Kashmiri (Sunanda is from Kashmir). A little later, her dad, who's not keeping very well, comes in. As they get talking, Sunanda chokes up a little. “I’m just emotional. We’re all missing my mom (who passed away a few months ago),” she confesses.

But this is a happy occasion for the family. And Sunanda is a very happy bride as she chats with her designer Anjali Chandiramani about her trousseau and muses about being lucky to have so many good friends in Dubai. She's also a bride who's been so busy that she’s barely had time to drink water. But she made the time to chat with Masala.com, and here’s what the new Mrs. Shashi Tharoor had to say.

When did you first meet Shashi and what did you think of him then?
I first met him at a forum in Delhi. And I thought exactly what everyone thinks when they meet him – He’s so d#%@ intelligent! I was very impressed.

What’s he like as a person?
He’s very kind, gentle, laidback, and very romantic. For our engagement, he read out a poem he’d written himself. And I thought that was just so romantic. One doesn’t generally think of South Indians as being romantic, that’s more what Kashmiris are known for!

How did he propose to you?
I wish I could share that. But he’ll kill me if I did! He wouldn't be happy with me taking a lot with the media either. He feels I've been hurt too much by them.

What did you feel when the IPL controversy happened?
Nothing about my life was reported right. The media were so wrong, there was absolutely no research done. Even newspapers here in Dubai got my age wrong. They said I was 48, when I’m actually 45. And I found the attitude very wrong. They seemd to be saying - If you have a brain, you can’t be good-looking . That’s my ambition – to change that perception. You can be a good-looking woman and smart and make money. Not that I'm saying I'm very good-looking, but I think I look alright.

What’s it like being a politician’s wife?
Political life is tough. You have to understand so many people, and be kind and gentle to them. But it’s work that brings a lot of satisfaction.

What’s your relationship with your husband's family like? We hear you’re learning Malayalam.
I’m learning Malayalam, I know a few words and phrases so far and I’m sure I’ll pick up more as there's a lot of work to be done for the constituency in Kerala. I share a great relationship with my mother-in-law, though we’re just known each other a few months. She told me, “Shashi finally has someone to organise his life!” And she knows I’m a devotee of Shiva, so she got me a Shiva pendant as a gift.

Do you wear a lot of jewellery? What’s your personal style? Do you wear saris often, like you wore for your wedding in India and are wearing now?
Now that I’m a politician’s wife, I will be wearing saris in public. But I would never give up my jeans. I’m actually totally not into clothes, much as I look like I am. In fact it takes me five minutes to do my face and two minutes to wear a sari. In fact, I have sorted all of Shashi's wedding reception outfits but still haven't decided on what exactly I'll be wearing.

Overview of the Film: The political thriller, set in New Delhi, was believed to be based on the controversial Jessica Lal murder case. However, later, the director clarified that the title and the script are actually inspired by a headline The Times Of India carried in 2006, when the accused in the infamous murder case were acquitted by the lower courts, leading to nationwide protests, reopening of the case and subsequent sentencing of the accused, and not the case per se.
