"Mahavatar Narasimha" Roars at the Box Office, Becomes Highest-Grossing Animated Film in India

MUMBAI – In a historic turn for Indian animation, the mythological epic Mahavatar Narasimha has emerged as a box office behemoth, shattering records and exceeding all expectations since its release on July 25. The film has not only become the first Indian animated movie to cross the ₹100 crore mark in its Hindi version but has also surpassed international blockbusters to become the highest-grossing animated film in India's history.

The film's performance has been nothing short of phenomenal. After a modest opening weekend, strong word-of-mouth fueled a massive surge in collections, with the movie's third weekend outperforming its first. According to trade analysts, the Hindi version of Mahavatar Narasimha has now collected a staggering ₹126.15 crore, placing it as the sixth highest-grossing Hindi film of 2025 and surpassing major releases like Akshay Kumar's Sky Force and Salman Khan's Sikandar. The film's worldwide gross has already crossed ₹210 crore.

This remarkable success is even more impressive given the film's competition. It has not only held its own but also dominated against other big releases, including Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2 and Ahaan Panday's debut film Saiyaara. While Saiyaara has been a box office hit in its own right, Mahavatar Narasimha saw consistent footfall and strong daily collections that outpaced its rivals, especially on weekends.

The film's success is attributed to several key factors. Director Ashwin Kumar's vision and the ambitious storytelling have resonated deeply with audiences. The animation quality, while a notable improvement for the Indian industry, has been secondary to the film's powerful narrative and emotional depth. The movie's voice performances and a spiritual theme rooted in Hindu mythology have created a strong emotional connection, drawing in family audiences and devotees alike.

As the film continues its historic run, it faces its biggest test yet with the impending release of two major films: Rajinikanth's Coolie and Hrithik Roshan-Jr. NTR's War 2. The industry will be closely watching to see how the animated epic holds its own against these two highly anticipated live-action blockbusters. For now, however, Mahavatar Narasimha stands as a landmark achievement, proving that Indian audiences are ready to embrace quality animation with a compelling, culturally relevant story.
