Born on October 23, 1959, in Cuttack, Odisha, Pinaki Mishra hails from a family with deep roots in public service. His father, Lokanath Misra, was a Member of Parliament and also served as a Governor. Pinaki Misra's educational background includes a B.A. (Hons) in History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and an LL.B. from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. He also received education as a qualified barrister from the Inner Temple in London.

He later joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009, 2014, and 2019, serving multiple terms as a Member of Parliament from Puri. During his parliamentary tenure, Misra has been a member of various significant committees, including the Standing Committee on External Affairs, the Committee on Subordinate Legislation, the Standing Committee on Civil Aviation, and the Standing Committee on Finance. He also served as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Urban Development.

Pinaki Misra is known for his eloquent and intellectual contributions to parliamentary debates, often bringing a nuanced legal perspective to complex policy discussions. While he has been a consistent presence in national politics for nearly three decades, he is noted for his calm and persuasive style, often contrasting with more high-octane political personas. He chose not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, marking a quiet exit from electoral politics.
