Stardust Awards 2016: Sultan, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Pink sweep away the top honours

Yet another award function attracted eyeballs even before the close of the year.

This time, it was the Stardust Awards which saw films like Ali Abbas Zafar's Sultan, Aniruddha Roy Chaudhary's Pink and Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Muskil sweep the top honours.

Unlike the last big awards night, the award for the Best Film of The Year was snatched away by Sultan from the formidable contender Pink.

The leading lady of the former, Anushka Sharma won the award for the Best Actress of The Year for her challenging roles of Aarfa and Alizeh in Sultan and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil respectively.

The Editor's Choice Best Actress award was given to Sonam Kapoor for her performance as the titular character in Ram Madhvani's biopic Neerja.

However, Pink managed to make its mark as the lead actor of the courtroom drama, Amitabh Bachchan was adjudged as the Best Actor of The Year for his portrayal of retired lawyer Deepak Sehhgal. The Editor's Award for Best Actor was conferred upon his Mohabbatien co-star Shah Rukh Khan for his double role of Aryan Khanna and Gaurav Chanda in Maneesh Sharma's Fan.

Khan's good friend Karan Johar grabbed the Best Director of The Year award for his romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The Indian Express further reports that apart from the top honours, Ae Dil Hai Muskil, Neerja, Sultan and Shakun Batra's Kapoor & Sons also dominated the awards in the technical categories.

Among other special honours, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walked away with the Iconic Performance of The Year award for the sensitive essaying of the character of Dalbir Kaur in Omung Kumar's biopic Sarbjit.

Priyanka Chopra was also in attendance to receive the Global Icon of The Year award for the rising popularity of her American television series Quantico and for her multiple appearances at high-profile events of the USA like the Academy Awards and the President's dinner at the White House.

Just like the Screen Awards, yesteryear actor Rekha was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her five-decade long contribution to the Indian cinema. Fast forward to the future, Varun Dhawan won the Best Superstar of Next Gen award for his hilarious performance of an amateur cop in brother Rohit Dhawan's comedy thriller Dishoom.

Neetu Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor present the Best Supporting Actor of The Year award to Rishi Kapoor. 


Among the supporting role categories, Jim Sarabh won the award for the Best Actor in a Negative Role for playing an airplane-hijacking terrorist in Neerja. Yesteryear actors Rishi Kapoor and Shabana Azmi won the Best Actors in Supporting Roles categories for their respective performances of a jolly 90-year old grandfather in Kapoor & Sons and a concerned yet confident mother in Neerja.

Priyanka Chopra receives the Global Icon of The Year award from Sridevi.


India Today reports that Anil Kapoor's son Harshvardhan Kapoor and his Mirzya co-actor Siyami Kher won the Best Debut awards respectively. Disha Patani shared the Best Female Debut award with Kher for playing Priyanka, the ex-girlfriend of cricketer MS Dhoni in Neeraj Pandey's biopic MS Dhoni: An Untold Story.

In the music category, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was a winner all the way as not only Pritam won the Best Music Director award but Amitabh Bhattacharya and Arjit Singh won the Best Lyricist and Best Playback Singer (Male) awards respectively for the song Channa Mereya.

In another special award, actor Ajay Devgn won the Path-breaking Direction award for his action entertainer Shivaay.
