Tamasha and Lavani: She was a pillar of the Tamasha art form - a traditional Marathi folk theatre that combines music, dance (especially Lavani), and theatrical skits (vags). Her contribution to both Lavani and Tamasha remains unmatched.

Legacy of Performance: Known for her commanding stage presence and deeply soulful performances, Vithabai played a pivotal role in popularizing these traditional art forms, making them integral to the cultural identity of Maharashtra.

President's Recognition: In recognition of her immense contribution to the preservation and promotion of Indian folk culture, she received two prestigious President's Awards (medals from the President of India) in 1957 and 1990.

Vithabai was born in Pandharpur, Solapur district, Maharashtra, into a family of artists.


Family Troupe: She was part of the family troupe, Bhau-Bapu Mang Narayangaonkar, which was set up by her grandfather, Narayan Khude.

Early Career: She began dancing in her father's productions from the young age of 11. She had no formal training but performed with effortless beauty, drawing inspiration from various forms of songs like Lavanya and Gavlan.

The Ultimate Dedication: A legendary story highlights her fierce dedication: while performing, despite being nine months pregnant, she went backstage to deliver her baby, cut the umbilical cord with a stone, and immediately returned to the stage to complete her performance. The audience, upon learning of her incredible act, praised her courage but insisted she rest.

Enduring Influence and Awards

Though she achieved great fame and honor during her career, Vithabai reportedly faced financial distress in her later years. However, her artistic legacy endures:

Vithabai Narayangaonkar Lifetime Achievement Award: 

In her memory, the Government of Maharashtra instituted the annual "Vithabai Narayangaokar Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2006. This award honors a senior Tamasha artist who has extensively contributed to the preservation and propagation of the art form.

Cultural Icon: Vithabai is consistently remembered as a legendary Tamasha artiste whose life story is one of a survivor, overcoming poverty and personal challenges to keep her art alive for the masses.

Her life continues to inspire performers and is now set to be immortalized on the silver screen in an upcoming biopic directed by Laxman Utekar, starring Randeep Hooda and Shraddha Kapoor.
