Madhuri Dixit In-laws' Initial Reaction to Dr. Nene's Career Change Revealed
Dr. Nene's Parents were Initially Wary of His Bold Career Change from Heart Surgeon to Entrepreneur.
Madhuri Dixit’s in-laws were not happy when Dr Nene decided to quit his job as a heart surgeon and move back to India: ‘My parents weren’t warm to this,’ says Dr. Nene.
Mumbai: Madhuri Dixit married Dr. Shriram Nene, and their love story took them from the glitz of Bollywood to the operating rooms of Denver, USA, and eventually back to India. While their journey together has been one of mutual support, Dr. Nene recently revealed that his decision to trade his successful career as a heart surgeon for the unpredictable world of medical technology entrepreneurship wasn't initially met with enthusiasm from his parents.
In a candid conversation shared on his YouTube channel, Dr. Nene reflected on the expectations placed upon him as an Indian immigrant's son. "I am Indian. I grew up from an immigrant start and my parents certainly weren’t happy that I am leaving the prototypical job of a heart surgeon and kind of every Indian’s wet dream with like perfect sort of situations and lots of friends and the head of the hospital," he admitted.
From an outsider's perspective, Dr. Nene was living a fulfilling life, professionally and personally. He was a respected cardio surgeon in Denver, a far cry from his early dabblings in tech. As he explained, "I had been a tech entrepreneur before with a software company at 14. My folks said that the only way to move forward is become a doctor or engineer." Following their advice, he dedicated two decades to medicine, finding it "very rewarding" to witness patients recover and connect with their families.
However, Dr. Nene's vision extended beyond the confines of the operating theater. He began to see the potential of technology to revolutionize healthcare on a much larger scale. "I said what if you could take health care as is traditionally practiced and then use a combination of media and technology to take it to the last mile and create digital frontiers where you can put a doctor in everyone’s pocket," he explained his motivation.
This ambition led to his pivotal decision in 2011 to step away from his surgical practice. The news was met with shock and concern by his colleagues. "In 2011, when I gave up my day job as a practicing clinical heart surgeon, you can imagine the responses. My partners were like, ‘What are you doing? We need you here’. My staff was devastated," Dr. Nene recalled.
Adding another layer to the initial resistance, Dr. Nene revealed that his parents also had reservations. "My parents initially weren’t warm to this," he confessed. However, their skepticism eventually turned into support and even financial backing as they witnessed his entrepreneurial ventures take shape. "[W]hen they saw what I had done with some of the start-ups, they wanted to write cheques," he proudly shared.
Madhuri Dixit, who moved to the US after marrying Dr. Nene in 1999 and later returned to India with him, has always been a pillar of support for her husband's endeavors. This revelation from Dr. Nene offers a more personal look into the challenges and eventual triumphs of their unconventional journey, highlighting the initial familial hurdles he overcame to pursue his innovative vision for healthcare.
