Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament (MP) from Thiruvananthapuram and the former Minister of State for External Affairs, finally tied the knot with his girlfriend Sunanda Pushkar today at 8:30 in the morning (August 22 2010). The wedding ceremony took place at the bridegroom's 200-year-old ancestral home at Elavanchery village near Palakkad
The marriage ceremony took place at the bridegroom's 200-year-old ancestral home at Elavanchery village near Palakkad, Ernakulam District of Kerala, according to Hindu Nair customs at 8.30 a.m on Sunday. The Wedding was solomnised in the presence of Shashi Tharoor's 94-year-old maternal grandmother Jayasankari Amma.
Sunanda was in traditional Kerala attire wearing a ’kasavu’ saree.
Both the bride groom and the bride sought the blessings of the elders before stepping on to the ’kathirmandapam’. According to custom, Shashi Tharoor tied the ‘thali’, symbolising the marital bond as per the Hindu custom, amid accompaniment of percussion and windpipe orchestra ‘nadaswaram’ at the auspicious moment shortly before 8.30 a.m. He also exchanged garlands and handed her ’podava’ or a new set of clothes.
While Mr. Throor was clad in traditional Malayali atire of Kurtha and mundu, Ms. Sunanda, who hails from Kashmir, turned up with off-white ‘veshti-mundu set’, like any Malayali bride would have preferred on her wedding.
Fifteen relatives from Kashmir had come with Sunanda for the wedding. Tharoor’s sons were also spotted at the wedding (View Images of Shashi Tharoor's Sons Ishaan and Kanisk Here). Although it was supposed to be a very private function a lot of people had come for the wedding. 'Niraputhiri’ function was also held at the house.
This is the third marriage for both Shashi and Sunanda.
Shashi Tharoor's first marriage was to Tilottama Mukherjee (View Pictures of Tilottma Here), an academic who he knew from school days in Calcutta. Mr. Tharoor recently divorced his second wife, Canadian Christa Giles (View Pictures of Christa Here).
The couple have hectic days ahead. They will leave by road for Coimbatore to take a flight to Thiruvananthapuram.
“They will arrive in Thiruvananthapuram late Sunday and stay at his rented flat in the city. On Thiru Onam day (Monday) at 10 a.m., there will be a get-together of select invitees.
“Then the next programme would be a reception in Dubai (Details of Dubai Reception Here). From there they move on to Spain and on Sep 3 for a honeymoon, a dinner will be held for their friends in Delhi,” said the aide.
Incidentally, the last Onam for Tharoor too was a memorable one. For the first time in five decades, he celebrated the festival in Kerala by having the traditional Thiru Onam lunch at an orphanage here.

Shashi Tharoor, 54, was born in London but has his roots in Palakkad. He had his school education in Mumbai and Kolkata and secured a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He completed a Ph.D. at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Massachusetts.
Shashi Tharoor, a former under secretary general at the UN, won by a record margin of nearly one lakh votes from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency in 2009.
Tharoor had to quit as Minister of State for External Affairs after it was revealed that Sunanda Pushkar had links to the Kochi IPL franchise.
