Its Official: ‘Padmaavat’ to release on January 25

‘Padmavati’ to release as ‘Padmaavat’ on January 25. Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor’s Padmavati finally has a release date. However, it is set to clash with Akshay Kumar’s PadMan.

The stars of controversial Bollywood film, Padmaavat, have confirmed its release date: January 25. In tweets shared by Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor with their character posters featuring a changed title, the actors finally put the rumours behind the release date to an end.


The film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was earlier titled Padmavati and drew the ire of organisations like Karni Sena the Kshatriya Mahasabha. It still banned from releasing in Rajasthan and Gujarat.


“Based on 16th century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem Padmavat, the movie faced resistance from its early stages due to a misinformation campaign and rumour-mongering. Despite these challenges, the film that showcases the valor of Rani Padmavati, Maharawal Ratan Singh and the famed Rajput ethos of honor, bravery and sacrifice, has managed to overcome all odds; aided by the support of well-wishers from across the film fraternity, the government authorities and the society at large,” Viacom said in a statement.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “Padmaavat is a dream come true for me. I have always been fascinated by the stories of honor, valor and vigor of our great Rajput warriors that have been captured so beautifully in our literature and this movie is my homage to those glorious stories. I would also like to thank the entire film fraternity for supporting Viacom18 and Bhansali Productions through the entire production and pre-release phase and hope they like the film they so supported.”

Padmavati was scheduled for a December 1 release which got postponed due to protests in several states for alleged misrepresentation of history and maligning the image of Queen Padmavati.

The Central Board of Film Certification recently cleared the film for release with U/A certificate and a set of five recommended changes:

1. Change the disclaimer to one that clearly does not claim historical accuracy.

2. The title is to be changed from Padmavati to Padmaavat – as the filmmakers have attributed their creative source as the fictional poem Padmavat, and not history.

3. Modifications to the song Ghoomar, to make the depiction befitting to the character being portrayed.

4. Modifications to the incorrect / misleading reference to historical places.

5. Addition of a disclaimer which clearly makes the point that the film in no manner subscribes to the practice of Sati or seeks to glorify it.

“Bhansali Productions and Viacom18 Motion Pictures, as producers, have accepted and have made all the above changes. We believe that these changes are in line with the filmic depiction of the story we wanted to tell. We firmly deny all speculation on extensive cuts to the film and want to reiterate that only the above changes and disclaimers per guidance of the CBFC have been made. We have full faith in the CBFC and in the transparent, fair and inclusive process that has been followed,” a statement from Viacom had read.

With a January 25 release, Padmaavat is set to clash with Akshay Kumar’s PadMan.
