RCB Victory Celebrations Turn Tragic, 11 Fans Die in Stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations turned tragic due to stampedes outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and near Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru.
Multiple reports indicate that more than 10 fans have died and many more have been injured. The deceased include a woman and a 14-year-old girl.
At least 11 people have reportedly died, with over 50 injured and admitted to hospitals. The stampedes occurred at two locations: outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium and near Vidhana Soudha, where the team was also felicitated by the government.
Cause of Stampede: The incidents were caused by overwhelming crowds, with thousands of fans attempting to enter the stadium and gather at the Vidhana Soudha to witness the RCB team and the IPL trophy. Police were reportedly overwhelmed and struggled to control the surging crowds.
Police resorted to mild lathi-charge in an attempt to manage the situation.
Despite the tragic news reaching authorities, the celebrations inside the Chinnaswamy Stadium reportedly continued for some time, leading to criticism from the public and on social media. The celebration at the Chinnaswamy stadium, which started around 5 PM, was eventually shortened or cancelled after 6:30 PM once the news of the deaths became widely known.
Government Response:
Metro Services Affected: Bengaluru Metro services from Cubbon Park and Vidhana Soudha Metro stations were temporarily stopped due to the surging crowds.
This tragic turn of events has cast a dark shadow over what was meant to be a joyous occasion for RCB fans, who had waited 18 years for their team's maiden IPL title. Investigations into the crowd management lapses are expected.
