Aamir Khan's "Sitaare Zameen Par" Embroiled in "Operation Sindoor" Controversy

Aamir Khan's highly anticipated film, "Sitaare Zameen Par," has found itself at the center of a social media storm, not for its cinematic merits, but for a controversial post made by Aamir Khan Productions (AKP) regarding "Operation Sindoor." The timing of the post, coinciding with the film's trailer release, ignited a wave of backlash, leading to boycott calls and accusations of opportunistic patriotism.

"Sitaare Zameen Par," touted as a spiritual sequel to Aamir Khan's critically acclaimed "Taare Zameen Par," is a sports drama where Khan plays a disgraced basketball coach who trains a team of neurodivergent children. The film aims to promote inclusivity and highlight the potential of individuals with intellectual disabilities. However, its intended message has been overshadowed by the recent controversy.

The genesis of the uproar lies in a post shared by Aamir Khan Productions on May 12, just hours before the trailer launch of "Sitaare Zameen Par." The post, which read "Salute to the heroes of Operation Sindoor. Heartfelt gratitude to our armed forces for their courage, bravery, and unwavering commitment to the security of our nation. Thank you to the Honourable Prime Minister for his leadership and determination. Jai Hind," was meant to commemorate a recent Indian military operation targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

However, many social media users were quick to point out the delayed nature of the post. "Operation Sindoor" had been carried out several days prior, prompting critics to question Aamir Khan's silence during the initial days of the incident and accuse him of using the national sentiment as a promotional tool for his upcoming film. Netizens flooded platforms like X (formerly Twitter) with comments labeling the move as "damage control" and "PR strategy" rather than genuine patriotism. Hashtags like #BoycottAamirKhan and #BoycottSitaareZameenPar began trending.

The controversy was further fueled by the resurfacing of an old photo from 2017 showing Aamir Khan shaking hands with the Turkish president during a visit to Turkey, a country perceived by some as having an anti-India stance. This added another layer to the public's scrutiny, with critics questioning his loyalty and suggesting a disconnect between his past actions and the recent patriotic post.

In response to the growing backlash, Aamir Khan Productions reportedly changed its social media profile pictures to the Indian National Flag, a move interpreted by many as an attempt to quell the criticism and regain public favor. While some defended this as a patriotic gesture, others dismissed it as a desperate measure to mitigate the negative publicity.

This isn't the first time Aamir Khan has faced public ire. His previous film, "Laal Singh Chaddha," also encountered boycott calls stemming from his past comments on "rising intolerance" in India. The current controversy surrounding "Sitaare Zameen Par" underscores the increasing pressure on public figures to navigate complex socio-political landscapes and the swiftness with which online sentiment can turn.

As "Sitaare Zameen Par" gears up for its theatrical release on June 20, 2025, it remains to be seen how this controversy will impact its box office performance.
