On December 24, Anil Kapoor turns 60 and while his wife, children and a few others are working towards turning the occasion into a kind of a milestone, the actor himself doesn't see it as one.
"My life has always been about consistency and moderation and I'd rather look the other way, than mark the day," he admits, recalling how in the past, when they hosted such get together's at their place, he'd disappear after a while saying he had to sleep because he had an early morning shoot and his friends would rib him saying, "Host so gaya".
Disappointingly for his friends, Anil will bring in his 60th birthday at an undisclosed foreign destination. Wife Sunita has already left the country. But Anil is quick to point out that he's always taken off for a week this time of the year to ring in Christmas and New Year with his better half, and since his birthday happens to arrive at the same time, he celebrates it too.
"Usually the children have their own plans but this year, on Sunita's insistence, Rhea and Sonam will be there, but Harsh (son Harshvardhan) is shooting 'Bhavesh Joshi' (his upcoming vigilante-drama), in Mumbai," Anil informs. Will they throw another party on their return? He hopes not, admitting all this party-sharty is 'pretty embarrassing'.
But surely the hip new haircut with which he's joined the gallery of Kapoors--younger brother Sanjay and nephews Arjun and Jahaan--who've sported the undercut earlier, prep for the big day? He denies it saying he was only trying out different looks for the sardar he plays in his upcoming wedding drama, 'Mubarakan', with his hairstylist friend Alim Hakim and his make-up man of 35 years. This particular cut brought an appreciative glint into the eyes of the other stylists but Rhea freaked out when she saw the picture he'd tweeted and called her mom who also hated it and ordered Anil off their bed. "Toh main kahan sounga?" he wailed and Sunita reiterated, "I don't know but you are not entering our bedroom." It was only after he was flooded with hundreds of rave messages and him arguing that the janta was with him, he was allowed back home.
Fortunately, there was no battle with fashionista Sonam whose friends had given him the thumbs-up while Harsh is too preoccupied with his film to give his dad's hair-raising adventures much thought. "Even if I were to go bald, he'd say, 'Dad, you know I was shooting till 6 am.' Earlier it was 'Mirzya', now it's 'Bhavesh Joshi', my son is all work," Anil laughs.
He himself was a workaholic who over the years has learnt to give his family priority and today can plan vacations which are all about long walks, leisurely spas, a little exercise and cosy dinners.
"It's about cutting yourself off from work and just chilling," Anil points out, but is quick to add that this time when he's in London, on December 22 and 23, he'll do some dubbing for his online show, 'The Book of Strange New Things'.
Reminiscing about his three-decade career, he remembers moments like sharing the frame with Dilip Kumar and is happy he can share anecdotes with his kids. "All three are sensible, well-educated and brought up well so I don't offer them any advice, rather they advise me," he chuckles.
One tip he can give on how to look a fighting fit 26 when you're 60. What's the secret?
"Consistency and reinvention," he quips, pointing out how he's seamlessly moved from films to TV to online.
"The platforms are different but I'm still doing what I know best acting. And off camera, I try and maintain myself well because this mind and body is like a car. Even an expensive vintage model needs to be polished, fuelled up and serviced regularly for it to glide down the streets. None of us are immortal, but as long as we're alive, we need to maintain ourselves and not go to seed."
