Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal Grace Cannes 2025 for Satyajit Ray's Restored Classic

A Timeless Tribute: Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal Grace Cannes 2025 for Satyajit Ray's Restored Classic.

The Cannes Film Festival, a beacon of global cinema, once again witnessed a moment of profound significance as veteran Indian actresses Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal walked the red carpet. Their presence was not just a celebration of their enduring legacies, but a powerful tribute to the genius of the late, legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, whose iconic 1970 film, "Aranyer Din Ratri" (Days and Nights in the Forest), was presented in a stunning 4K restored version under the prestigious Cannes Classics section.

A Return to the Riviera for a Cinematic Gem:

Sharmila Tagore, a Cannes veteran herself (having had "Devi" in the official selection in 1962 and serving as a jury member in 2009), returned to the French Riviera for a poignant reason. She starred in "Aranyer Din Ratri" as Aparna, a poised and intellectual city woman, and her return alongside the film's restoration underscored the timeless relevance of Ray's work.

For Simi Garewal, who played the spirited tribal girl Duli in the film, this marked her much-anticipated Cannes red carpet debut at the age of 77. Her elegant presence added a special charm to the event, creating a truly memorable moment for Indian cinema enthusiasts worldwide.

Elegance Personified:

For the Red Carpet Looks, both actresses chose ensembles that beautifully reflected their classic styles while paying homage to Indian heritage.

Sharmila Tagore exuded regal simplicity in a rich emerald green silk saree with a delicate gold zari border. Her minimalist yet majestic appearance, complemented by a tasteful gold clutch and subtle green earrings, was a masterclass in understated elegance. Her hair, styled in soft waves and gently pinned back, added a vintage charm that resonated with her timeless appeal. She was also accompanied by her daughter, jewellery designer Saba Pataudi, who opted for an all-yellow ethnic ensemble.

Simi Garewal, true to her signature aesthetic, made her debut in a custom all-white ensemble designed by the Indian couture label Karleo. Her look featured a voluminous ivory skirt adorned with rose montes and intricate silk threadwork, paired with a modern, cascading jacket crafted from raw silk. This ensemble blended Indian craftsmanship with a globally sophisticated silhouette, creating a look that was both fresh and quintessentially 'Simi Garewal'.

The Restoration and Wes Anderson's Admiration:

The screening of "Aranyer Din Ratri" was particularly special as it showcased a meticulously restored 4K version of the film. This six-year-long restoration project was led by acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker Wes Anderson, a self-professed admirer of Satyajit Ray's work. Anderson, who introduced the film at the screening, expressed his profound respect for Ray, stating, "Anything signed by Satyajit Ray must be cherished and preserved; but the nearly-forgotten 'Days and Nights in the Forest' is a special/particular gem." He described the 1970 film as "modern and novelistic," praising its exploration of human complexities.

The restoration was a collaborative effort, presented by The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project at L'Immagine Ritrovata, in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection, with funding from the Golden Globe Foundation.

A Standing Ovation for a Masterpiece:

"Aranyer Din Ratri," based on Sunil Gangopadhyay's novel, delves into themes of alienation, class, and modernity, following four city-bred men who retreat to the forests of Palamau. The film, which also starred Soumitra Chatterjee, received a well-deserved standing ovation at Cannes, a testament to its enduring power and relevance decades after its original release.
