Munna Bhai, undoubtedly, is one of the greatest roles that Sanjay Dutt has ever played onscreen. So much so, that Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. went on to become a franchise. However, there’s a startling fact about the role that not many people are aware of, which is – Shah Rukh Khan, and not Sanjay Dutt, was the first choice for the film.
According to the buzz, Sanjay Dutt was supposed to play the role of Circuit (Arshad Warsi) and SRK was to play Munna Bhai. We wonder how the movie would have been with SRK in it.
No one knows why Shah Rukh Khan rejected the role, but recently he admitted that he doesn’t regret missing on that opportunity, as he couldn’t have essayed the role better than Sanjay Dutt.
“I think that every actor is destined to do certain films. I feel I couldn’t have done it as well as Sanjay Dutt did,” said King Khan in a statement recently.
This is, of course, not the first time that an actor has rejected a role as iconic as Munna Bhai. Here’s a list of actors who have rejected some of the best roles in the recent times.
1. Sonam Kapoor – Bahubali
On Neha Dhupia's talk show, No Filter Neha, Sonam Kapoor revealed that she was offered a role in magnum opus Bahubali. The actress, however, refused to reveal which role she was offered and why she denied taking it up. Sonam, for sure, missed a great opportunity.
2. Phogat sisters – Dangal
The Phogat sisters were, apparently, offered to play their own roles in Dangal, a film based on the life of their father and wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat. However, the sisters turned down the offer to act in the Aamir Khan starrer stating that acting and wrestling didn’t go together and that their focus was on wrestling, at that moment.

Before Diljit Dosanjh, the role of policeman Sartaj Singh in Udta Punjab was reportedly offered to Fawad Khan as well as Ayushmann Khurrana, but both of them rejected the role. While Fawad Khan opted out stating that he didn’t want to be paired opposite Kareena Kapoor as she was older than him and that it would have impacted his career, Ayushmann Khurrana, on the hand, couldn’t accept it due to prior commitments.
4. Saif Ali Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Shahid Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Aditya Roy Kapur – Kapoor and Sons
Not one but five popular B-town actors rejected Fawad Khan’s role in one of the best movies of 2016 – Kapoor and Sons – because of its sexual orientation. While Saif said a gay character wouldn’t have suited him, the other four actors didn’t spill beans on why they rejected the role.
Furthermore, Ranbir Kapoor also admitted that if in case he was offered the role, he would have also rejected it. Applauding Fawad for opening the door by playing a homosexual role, he also admitted having rejected many homosexual roles in the past as well.
5. Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut – Sultan
It is said that the makers of Sultan wanted to rope in an A-list actress for the movie, and hence, they were considering Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut for the role. However, both of them rejected the offer. After Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Jai Ho, Sher Khan (shelved project), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Kick, Sultan was the sixth film that Deepika had rejected opposite Salman Khan.
While it is said that Deepika was busy with other projects, Kangana didn’t want to play a smaller role in comparison to the male lead, and thus, she didn’t accept the role. Furthermore, Kangana has many times admitted that she is not interested in working with the Khans unless she is offered an equal role.
6. Deepika – Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Deepika, who debuted in Bollywood alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om, was offered the role of SRK’s love interest that Katrina Kaif played in Jab Tak Hai Jaan. However, the actress rejected the role for reasons unknown.
7. Kareena Kapoor – Queen
The movie after which Kangana Ranaut officially got the title ‘Queen of Bollywood,’ and the movie, which was a turning point in the actress’ career, was first offered to Kareena Kapoor. However, she rejected the role.
Not only Queen, Kareena has rejected several other big films in her career that include – Ram Leela, Chennai Express, Fashion and Kal Ho Na Ho among others. The actress, however, doesn’t regret her decisions at all.
8. Kareena Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Radhika Apte – Kaabil
If rumours are to be believed, Kareena Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra both turned down the Hrithik Roshan starrer film because of the short role. The female lead, in the movie, dies before the interval. On the other hand, Radhika Apte couldn’t be a part Kaabil because of date issues.
9. Amy Jackson, Vidya Balan, Parineeti Chopra – Kick
Not only Amy Jackson, but Vidya Balan and Parineeti Chopra were reportedly offered Salman Khan-starrer Kick, which eventually went to Jacqueline Fernandez. While Amy Jackson couldn’t accept the offer because of prior commitments, Vidya Balan and Parineeti Chopra rejected the role because of lack of substance.
10. Richa Chadda – Anarkali of Aarah
The role of erotic singer in Anarkali of Aarah was offered to Masaan actress Richa Chadda before Swara Bhaskar, but Richa was sceptical about the release of the project because of a newcomer director and an individual producer. The film hasn’t released as of yet but it is slated to hit the screens on June 24.
11. Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor – Dil Dhadhkne Do
If Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor would have accepted the roles of siblings in Dil Dhadakne Do, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra would not have been a part of the project. The real life cousins, however, turned down the role.
12. Amrita Rao – Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
Amrita Rao was offered the role of Salman Khan’s sister in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. However, she wanted to romance the superstar in the Sooraj Barjatya directorial. The role, eventually, went into Swara Bhaskar’s Kitty
