Let’s not forget human beings have favourites: Vidya Balan on nepotism in Bollywood

Kangana Ranaut had called filmmaker Karan Johar the flag-bearer of nepotism in Bollywood during her appearance on Koffee with Karan. The spat became uglier when Johar retorted later, saying Kangana doesn’t know the meaning of nepotism.

Ever since actor Kangana Ranaut refused to mince her words on nepotism in Bollywood when she appeared on director Karan Johar’s Koffee with Karan show, everybody’s been talking about the “menace” in the industry. Now, Vidya Balan, the poster girl of self-made women in Bollywood, has now jumped into the fray.

In a conversation with Pinkvilla, she said, “I personally haven’t experienced that. I have absolutely no one in the film industry but I did have the luxury of choice because I am a Bombay girl. My parents and sister were extremely supportive. I didn’t have to run away from home and survival was never an issue and therefore I am saying that it is a luxury of choice.”

She added,“But having said that, Kangana feels that way. To each his own. Everyone has different experiences. I am no one to comment but my experiences are different. There are camps but let’s not forget that human beings have favourites.”

Kangana had called Johar the flag-bearer of nepotism in Bollywood in the chat show. To which, Johar retorted that Kangana doesn’t know the meaning of nepotism and she always plays the victim card. Not the one to take things lying down, Kangana hit back, replying she was playing the badass rather than a woman or a victim.

A lot of actors including Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Anupam Kher have expressed their opinions on the ongoing debate since then.

It seems the nepotism debate is not going to die down anytime soon.
