Film audience no longer feels the need to go to a theatre to watch a star: Vidya Balan

Image
Actor Vidya Balan says that good films are the real attraction for film enthusiasts. Vidya Balan is an actor who is known to pick projects with strong scripts and characters than look for commercial success. And she agrees that in today’s times, even when Bollywood actors still enjoy a demigod status among fans, film audiences largely value content over anything else when it comes to catching a film in a theatre. “People are so prudent when it comes to spending time and money, so they put thoughts like ‘is it worth my time, money and energy to go to the theatre?’ and if they’ll get to experience something different,” says Vidya, who has won hearts of critics and fans alike with films such as Paa (2009), The Dirty Picture (2011), Kahaani (2012), and her most recent, Tumhari Sulu (2017). An award for Sulu is an award for the exemplary team on #TumhariSulu ...because you brought out the best in me🙂. I wouldve liked to thank each of you individually but couldn’t so...

Vidya Balan turns down film based on Meena Kumari

Apart from Vidya Balan, director Karan Razdan narrated the script to actor Madhuri Dixit Nene but things didn't work out. He said the only actor who showed interest was Sunny Leone. Wanting to continue her break from heavy-duty roles, actor Vidya Balan, who is riding high on Tumhari Sulu’s success, has rejected a script based on veteran actor Meena Kumari’s life, claims writer-director Karan Razdan. Razdan, who is known for penning Ajay Devgn’s Deewane (2000) and Diljale (1995), narrated the film to Vidya but the actor turned down it, saying she wants to non-serious roles right now. Talking to indianexpress.com, Razdan said, “I narrated her something but at the moment she is wanting to do something that’s non-serious. She has had too much of serious stuff. We spoke at length. Maybe tomorrow, I may have that kind of a script for her. But at the moment, I wanted her to play the role of an actress of the 1960s. The film dealt with alcoholism and tragedy.” When asked...

Vidya Balan: I have rubbed people the wrong way like Kangana Ranaut

Image
In the midst of promotions for her upcoming film Begum Jaan, Vidya Balan reiterates that working with the Khans is not priority. Her comment mirrors that of Kangana Ranaut, and speaks of an appealing confidence. In fact, on closer analysis, many parallels can be drawn between the actresses. The staunch feminists demand a prominent screen presence in their films, and hail from families that have little to do with Bollywood. Tracing her journey back to the early days, Vidya says that like Kangana, who got into the bad books of industry bigwigs for calling Karan Johar nepotistic, she has also rubbed people the wrong way. "Thankfully, I never landed into any trouble, [at least] publicly, but have been reminded of it in my interactions with them later," she tells mid-day, adding that she isn't fazed by the behaviour. "Missing out [on working with me] is absolutely their loss. These things don't stop good roles from coming your way." Throughout her...

Let’s not forget human beings have favourites: Vidya Balan on nepotism in Bollywood

Image
Kangana Ranaut had called filmmaker Karan Johar the flag-bearer of nepotism in Bollywood during her appearance on Koffee with Karan. The spat became uglier when Johar retorted later, saying Kangana doesn’t know the meaning of nepotism. Ever since actor Kangana Ranaut refused to mince her words on nepotism in Bollywood when she appeared on director Karan Johar’s Koffee with Karan show, everybody’s been talking about the “menace” in the industry. Now, Vidya Balan, the poster girl of self-made women in Bollywood, has now jumped into the fray. In a conversation with Pinkvilla, she said, “I personally haven’t experienced that. I have absolutely no one in the film industry but I did have the luxury of choice because I am a Bombay girl. My parents and sister were extremely supportive. I didn’t have to run away from home and survival was never an issue and therefore I am saying that it is a luxury of choice.” She added,“But having said that, Kangana feels that way. To each his...

Vidya Balan will be seen mouthing expletives in her upcoming film Begum Jaan, but the actress says she was comfortable with that as it was the demand of the character. Vidya plays the role of a brothel’s madam in the film, set against the backdrop of the freedom struggle. The action-drama is written and directed by National award winning filmmaker Srijit Mukherji and is the remake of Bengali film Rajkahini. “All the abuses which I can’t give otherwise, I said it here,” Vidya joked at the trailer launch of the movie. The actress said expletives are not uncommon in that area her character comes from so they stuck with that. “The place where she comes from she abuses a lot and easily. It’s no big deal. When I was playing the role there was no apprehension with regards to the language. I can’t be Begum Jaan and s...
