Batti Gul Meter Chalu movie review: The Shahid Kapoor starrer is a film with good intentions

Image
Batti Gul Meter Chalu is a hark-back to a forgotten tradition, which, at its best, gave us story and substance. Batti Gul gives us both, for most part. Batti Gul Meter Chalu movie cast: Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Yami Gautam, Divyendu Sharma, Sushmita Murkherjee Batti Gul Meter Chalu movie director: Shree Narayan Singh Batti Gul Meter Chalu movie rating: Two and a half stars To make a message go down easy, you have to pad up the movie nice and proper. This is something that Hindi cinema used to understand and implement, as the default mainstream story-telling style. Batti Gul Meter Chalu is a hark-back to a forgotten tradition, which, at its best, gave us story and substance. Batti Gul gives us both, for most part. In Uttarakhand, ‘batti is gul’, but the meter keeps ticking. The fact of people living with no electricity, or with power that is so scant as to be laughable is let gently into a plot which starts as your familiar triangle: one girl, two boys. Don’t think we need to promote Padmaavat, says Shahid Kapoor

Image
Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, due to the controversies, could not actually get time and opportunity for going on a promotional spree. Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, due to the controversies, could not actually get time and opportunity for going on a promotional spree. But Shahid Kapoor, who plays Maha Rawal Ratan Singh, feels this film needs no promotion, rather it’s time for the audience to decide upon it. “I don’t think we need to promote this film any more. This film should speak for itself. I think we have done everything we need to do. Now it’s time for people to decide what they feel,” he said, while addressing the media at the HT Most Stylish Awards on Wednesday. “We have not really promoted this film. It was the toughest thing. I thought it will be a relaxing thing. Generally the extreme nervousness of a film, before its release, passes by on a promotional spree. But this time, it was a long wait,” the 36-year-old actor added. ...

Padmaavat Movie Review: Padmaavat is a remarkable motion picture experience

Image
Something I wrote about BAJIRAO MASTANI holds true for PADMAAVAT as well… “It’s a pre-requisite to possess a mega budget, have exhaustive knowledge of the subject matter, possess nerves of steel to handle the gigantic cast/crew and last but not the least, the vision and fortitude to bring a historical to life on celluloid in today’s times. You can face instant rejection from the paying public or face controversies and protests for deviating from facts. The film-maker has to walk a tight rope.” PADMAAVAT – everyone’s aware – has made it to the front page of newspapers and on prime time news on national television. It’s the most talked-about, voraciously discussed and hotly debated film of our times. The mileage it received – nationwide and internationally – has only enhanced the curiosity. Everyone’s curious to watch, examine, evaluate and scrutinize PADMAAVAT. The stakes are high and so are the expectations. The moviegoer in me is enthralled by historicals and mytholo...

Padmaavat Box Office Report: Mixed Picture For Padmaavat Advance Booking

Image
The much hyped Padmavati has had a mixed advance which opened over the weekend. The advance has not opened in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. While UP, Bihar and Haryana sees advance open at places with the rest being normal. The advance can be only be judged where it is open like normal and that is Mumbai (exc Gujarat), Delhi NCR, Punjab (state only), West Bengal and South. In these areas where its a normal advance it can be compared with last years Republic Day week release Raees at some of centers of these circuits but other places hardly have an advance. Its a very mixed picture as far as advance is concerned. This is probably because its a wait and watch attitude by the audience at many places. An example of this is that South Delhi has a strong advance which is similar to a Raees but then Faridabad which is close by has an advance of a 4-5 crore film opening film like Raabta or Secret Superstar. There can be differences between South Delhi and Faridabad but not...

Why Padmaavat will decimate Pad Man at the box office on Jan 25

Image
You need to take one look at the trailer of Padmaavat, earlier Padmavati, to realise the amount of hard work that has gone into every frame, every second of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. A part of the reason why the film faced so much trouble before its release is because of what the trailer promised. If released on December 1, 2017, Padmavati would have been a sure-shot blockbuster, one that only Tiger Zinda Hai might have been able to overtake a few weeks after the release. But Fate had other plans for Padmavati. Massive protests rocked the nation, from Rajasthan to Bihar, from Delhi to Tamil Nadu. Threats were issued left, right and centre. Deepika Padukone was called unpalatable names; Sanjay Leela Bhansali, even worse. Padmavati missed its date with the box office. December 1, the day when the film was supposed to hit the theatres, came and went without Padmavati in screens. Petitions reached the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). It took the censo...

"It's not pleasant for both (the parties) and will impact both. But they have also been through enough of their own hurdles. But I wish they would have come a week earlier or a week after us preferably. I am sure Mr (Sanjay Leela) Bhansali has made a wonde...

Reasons why SLB's Padmavati might not release before March

Image
The CBFC source says that all of this is a time-consuming exercise. The Padmavati team, which was hoping to get clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after the Gujarat elections, is in for some disappointment. Sources at the CBFC say that there are no plans of viewing Padmavati this year. Says an important source, “There is no way Padmavati can be certified before January. December is almost over. We have not scheduled the film. There are at least 40 feature films in different languages, waiting in the queue before Padmavati.” The source further informs us that the Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie has “unnecessarily complicated its case” with an ambiguous disclaimer in its application for certification. Adds the source, “We now have to appoint a panel of historians to view the film, because according to the disclaimer, it’s partially based on historical facts. The content will now have to be scrutinised for authenticity.” The CBFC source says th...
