Interview: Salman Khan Talks About Ek Tha Tiger

‘Actors don’t do movies TO BREAK RECORDS’ They just want to make sincere films, says Salman Khan in a chat with Bombay Times

At a suburban Mumbai studio, between takes, Salman Khan sits outside his vanity van, surrounded by his in-house doctor, some members of the cine artists association and his own team. Bhai, as he is fondly referred to by most people, is organizing an eye-camp for the less privileged in Bollywood. Once he has wrapped that up, he takes a short break to talk to BT...

Salman, how is your health now?
I’m fit. Thank you for asking.

The box office expectation for your new film is humongous and the buzz is that no other filmmaker wishes to release his film around that time!
Well, it should be. It’s the coming together of two big brands — Salman Khan and Yash Chopra. Naturally, expectations are bound to be high. But that is not something I orchestrated. It is something that the trade is expecting. I only set out to make a good film. On second thoughts, our industry needs more money, yaar. Now the government has decided to burden us with a 12.5% service tax. It’s crazy the way this business functions.

Will the Bodyguard figures be toppled this August?
Actors don’t do movies to break records. Records get made and broken because of statistics. The number of theatres that play Bollywood movies globally has increased. I want all films to start crossing the 200 cr mark. I was sitting with some members of the junior artists association, and was saddened to hear that many of them still don’t have money to pay for their medical needs and basic amenities. I hope all our movies make enough money to at least provide these guys with a decent livelihood.

Your onscreen chemistry with Katrina now is far better than it was in Yuvvraaj, your last film together.
Oh, is that so? Katrina is a big star now. She seeks perfection in everything she does. She practises her dance numbers for 2-3 days, relentlessly. For someone who could not speak a sentence in Hindi, she now delivers her Hindi dialogues almost as well as any of us.

In the movie, she has a dialogue, in which she says, ‘Aap ki shaadi ki umar ho gayi hai.’ Do you have a befitting reply?
Well that’s a dialogue and it is not to be taken seriously. Honestly, I don’t think even Katrina meant it seriously.

Two decades in the business, and the Khan trio still rules..
It’s destiny. I’m grateful to Sooraj Barjatya for Maine Pyar Kiya and so many others who believed in me. I guess all three of us (Aamir, Shah Rukh and I) lucked out. Sometimes we got good scripts that became even better films. And at other times, our very ordinary films have done wonders at the box office. But above all, we have God’s blessings and have managed a faithful fan following.

The biggest Khan? Aamir, Shah Rukh or you?
Next. This question doesn’t interest me.

Are you doing Sooraj Barjatya’s film next?
He has narrated a script to me. But I’m starting my brother Sohail’s film next. Actually, when I heard Sohail’s script, my immediate reaction was, ‘Wow.’ If a script doesn’t do that to me, I’m not even going to attempt a film anymore.

How does ‘wow’ happen?
Bante bante ban jata hai. A script may be just adequate in the first draft. It becomes extraordinary with a few good dialogues; some good emotions; a great music track; some fantastic action. Having said that, I’m the first one to admit that despite everything we do, sometimes we actors go horribly wrong with our choice of movies. After all, we are just human.

Introducing Sidharth Malhotra in Student of the Year

FROM ASSISTANT DIRECTOR TO HERO: Siddharth Malhotra’s short journey to stardom involved a rickshaw ride that led him to Karan Johar’s office

It was one rickshaw ride that changed Siddharth Malhotra’s life. He had come to Mumbai for a film that never took off, but he was managing well with modelling assignments coming his way. He was on the verge of signing an offer with a top brand when the clear blue skies and a bumpy ride gave him an idea he could not get out his head. He wanted to learn basic acting and filmmaking skills. Once the idea consumed him, he went straight to Karan Johar’s office. Says Karan, “He somehow met someone at Dharma Productions and got the job of a trainee assistant director (AD) on My Name is Khan (MNIK). “MNIK was an expansive shoot, but he lasted all through and was one of the finest ADs of the film.”

A high school campus romance was what Karan always had in mind, but he’d earlier thought he would produce the film. He changed his mind later. “I wanted to visit the kind of space I hadn’t for a while — the world of music, song and dance and romance. And I found my leads,” says Karan.

Siddharth’s father was in the Merchant Navy, and he grew up in Defence Colony, Delhi. Karan still remembers the day he told Siddharth he would be directing the film. “He was zapped! He kept on saying, ‘No you are lying.’” Karan remembers calling Siddharth’s father and mother, Sunil and Rimma (Malhotra). They were speechless. “We are just so happy our son is in the right hands,” said Sunil to Karan.

Student of The Year, produced by Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment, releases on October 19, 2012.

Are Rani Mukerjee and Aditya Chopra Secretly Married ?

According to an insider from Yash Raj Films (YRF), Rani and Aditya have been married for several months now. The wedding apparently took place around Diwali last year.

“They didn’t want people to know they are married because Rani has two films releasing this year (Talaash and Aiyya),” says our source. “The news of their wedding might hamper the prospects of the films. They will declare their marriage after the movies release.”

According to insiders, the staff of YRF see Rani as very much part of the Chopra family. “Everyone in YRF addresses her as Bhabhi (sister-in-law),” says our source. “She keeps an eye on the studios and make-up rooms as though they were her own home, and also keeps the YRF employees on their toes.”

The couple recently celebrated Rani’s birthday in London, where the cast and crew of Yash Chopra’s untitled film have been shooting for the past month, adds our source. “Rani cut her birthday cake there with Adi. They kept it a very private affair. Only Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif were invited,” says the insider.

During the film’s shoot, says our source, the couple stayed together at the Four Seasons Hotel, unlike the rest of the unit which was put up at the nearby Washington Mayfair Hotel.

First Look: Raaz 3 Movie Poster Featuring Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu’s dusky beauty and oomph factor have always been a draw for filmmakers and audiences alike. But for the poster of her upcoming film Raaz 3, the sultry actor has raised the bar even higher with this photo shoot.

Incidentally, producers Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt, who worked with Bipasha 10 years ago in Raaz (2002), didn’t want her to do the shoot.

An insider reveals, “The Bhatts felt the pose and outfit were too bold and didn’t want Bipasha to do it, thinking she might be uncomfortable. Also, they felt they might have to tone down the concept eventually. So they planned to get a body double and morph Bipasha’s face onto the model’s body later. But when she found out, the actor insisted on doing it herself.”

Bipasha says, “When I learnt about the concept, I decided to do it. I had no qualms. It’s my movie and I should be shooting for the poster. I understand that it was required to show the film’s theme in the right light. I have always been comfortable in my skin and never been conscious of my body. It was the right decision.”

The 3D horror film, directed by Vikram Bhatt, also stars Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta. Raaz 3’s promos will be aired with Jism 2 on August 3.

Video: Rajesh Khanna's Last Message-Superstar Recorded Message For Family, Friends and Fans, Played at His Chautha

Rajesh Khanna, the actor who romanced death on screen as often as he did heroines, left behind a special recorded message for his family, friends and fans. 40 years ago, in Anand, his character taped a message for Babumoshai or Amitabh Bachchan. In real life, the superstar's message was played at his chautha held over the weekend.

Here's the full transcript of his recorded message:

Mere pyaare dosto, bhaiyo aur beheno nostalgia mein rehene ki aadat nahi hai mujhe. Hamesha bhavishya ke baare mein hi sochna padta hai jo din guzar gaya hai, beet gaya hai ,uska kya sochna lekin jab jaane pehchane chehre anjaan se ek mehfil mein milte hai toh yaadein wapas tazaa ho jati hai.

( My dear friends, I'm not the one to get nostalgic. I've always looked ahead towards the future. Whatever has passed let it stay in the past, thinking about bygones doesn't help. But, when one suddenly comes across familiar faces in unfamiliar settings, the memories comes rushing back.)

Mera janam theatre se hua, mein aaj jo kuch bhi hu yeh stage yeh theatre ki badaulat hu. Mein jab filmo mein aya toh mera koi Godfather nahin tha, koi risthedar nahi the, koi sar par hath rakhnewala nahin tha. Main aya through the United Producers Filmfare Talent contest. Humko bulaya gaya that Times of India mein waha par bade-bade prodcuers the, chahe woh Chopra saab the, Bimal Roy the, Shakti Samnta the, bahut saare the. Unhone kaha ke humne aapko dailogue bheja hai, woh yaad kiya aapne? Mein saamne bhaitha tha aur woh ek badi si table mein line mein bhaite the. Haan ji. Main kaha, dilgoue toh aapne bheej diya ki kis tarah maa ko convince karna hai, dialogue bolna hai aapne characterisation nahin bataya, yeh toh koi stage ka actor hi bol sakta hai. To bole theek hai achcha hai tum koi aapna hi dailogue sunao. Ab kato toh khoon nahin, pasina chut raha tha. Meine kaha kya daigloue bolu, mere saamne sab bade bade log, inki sab picture 10-10 baar dekhe hai, produce-direct ki hui. Jo dailogue, jiski wajah se mein filmo mein aaya, mujhe GP Sippy ne chance diya 40 saal pehle, Haan mein Kalakar hu, Haan mein Kalakar hun, kya karoge meri kahani sunkar.

(My journey began with theater, I owe my success to the stage. This theater where it all began when I joined the film industry, I had no God Father, no relatives or family that I could turn too. I came into the movies through the United Producers Filmfare Talent contest. We were called to the Times of India in the presencen of celeberated filmmakers like Chopra saab, Bimal Roy , Shakti Samanta and many others. They asked me we had sent you a dialogue, did you memorise it? I was sitting in front of the table where they were seated and felt I was undergoing a courtmartial. I thought they would take a gun and fire at me. I said, "I know the dialogue but you haven't told me what's the characterisation of the person who is to narrate this dialogue. Is he the hero who is announcing to his mother that he plans to marry a dancer and maker her the daughter-in-law of the house? You haven't told me whether this hero is rich , poor, a villianou character or a pleasant fellow, is he from the middle class?" So, Mr Chopra said, "You are from the stage so make your own characterisation how will you convince the mother." I said this is not a dialogue for a stage actor to mouth, so he said then you chose your own dialogue. I was nervously sweating and anxious wondering which dialogue should I impress them with. I had seen their movies several times and this is the dialogue I said which took me towards stardom. The dialogue was Yes I am an artist , yes I am artist, why would you want to hear my story, the dialogue which began my story in cinema.)

Doston aap ka ek hissedar mein bhi hu aur jaise maine pehli bhi kaha ki aap apna kimti waqt nikalkar, aap ka yeh pyaar tha ki aap majood hue aur itni bhaari ssankhya mein..meine yehi kahunga ki bahut-bahut sukhriya, thank you aur mera bahut-bahut salaam.

(Friends, I'm a part of you, and as I said, you have all taken time out for me. This is the love, your presence in numbers that I'm greatful for, thank you, thank you my salaam to you all.)
