Rajinikanth paid many of the distributors who suffered loss due to Lingaa, but purely on humanitarian grounds. He was, in no way, bound to do so. No other actor in Tamil film industry had ever done so. The first time one heard of Rajinikanth was back in the mid 1980s. Those were the days when families preferred to watch films not in cinema halls -- the decline of cinema among the film-going populace in the ’80s was just beginning -- but on VCRs. I recall watching Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini-starrer Andha Kanoon (1983) sometime perhaps in 1985-86. As a youngster, my focus was, of course, on the lead stars. However, I distinctly recall noticing another actor – the second lead, who, er, wasn’t exactly much of a looker by Bollywood standards. Growing up in an era of many good-looking men in Bollywood (think Kabir Bedi, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor), there was no way Rajinikanth was going to impress. The fact that he spoke Hindi with a heavy south Indian accent didn’t help. Howev...

For nearly three decades now, Rajinikanth has made it a ritual of sorts to stay out of station or the country to avoid all the fan frenzy around his birthday. While millions of fans celebrate December 12 as a festival of sorts, Superstar Rajinikanth has notoriously avoided any lavish celebrations on his birthdays. Many believe that the Thalivar did not indulge in celebrations only for the last three years. In 2015, he requested his fans to do away with celebrations due to Chennai floods and in 2016 due to the death of the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. This year, he has again said no to the celebration given that Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring states have been recovering from the damages caused by Cyclone Ochki. But, as opposed to popular belief, not just the last three times, for nearly three decades now, he has made it a ritual of sorts to stay out of station or the country to avoid all the fan frenzy around his birthday. It is just not because of his trademark hu...

Rajinikanth to appear as a scientist and a robot, not a dwarf in 2.o Rubbishing rumours about Rajinikanth playing dwarves in Shankar’s 2,o, a source has confirmed to HT that the Tamil superstar will appear only as a scientist and robot Chitti. A section of media has reported that actor Rajinikanth will be seen playing two dwarves in his upcoming sci-fi action entertainer 2.o. “We have no idea how such baseless reports crop up. 2.o is only based on Vaseegaran (scientist Rajinikanth), Chitti (Robot) and Akshay Kumar, an evil scientist. Besides these three characters, Sudhanshu Pandey plays the son of dead scientist Bohra (played by Danny Denzongpa in the first part) while Amy Jackson’s role will be a surprise. However, Rajinikanth playing two dwarves is completely false,” says a reliable source. The source adds, “Akshay Kumar’s destructive activities would cause the necessity of bringing back Chitti, which was dismantled in the first part. The film will offer a visually stunni...

Robot (Hindi) could not make much impact at the box office as it grossed around 7 crore nett box office collections in its opening weekend. Robot had first day business of around 1.75 crore nett only. The film did better on Saturday and Sunday but the big jump in collections was not there. The collections were mainly from Mumbai circuit (3.25 crore nett) and CPCI (1 crore nett). The North remained very dull. The shows of Endhiran (Tamil) were much better be it Mumbai, Delhi or Gurgaon but it was a very limited release. Overall Robot (Hindi) has not done well especially if we look at the release which was pretty wide. It will have to depend on the weekdays and second weekend if it is to put up a decent final total.

Robot (Hindi) First Day Business/box office collections of Robot Robot (Hindi) had a slow start, it did improve slightly as the day progressed but the jump was not big. Most of the business came from the Maharashtra belt as North India performed badly and South has the regional versions of the film which left little space for the Hindi version. The film does actually have good reviews from most places but as start is low it will be interesting if the film can actually translate the good reports into good collections. The original Tamil version of Robot, Endhiran took a monumental opening in Tamil Nadu and has extraordinary reports and will emerge the highest grossing Tamil film ever. It is to be seen if the film manages to recover its huge prodution costs and becomes a hit. Robot (Hindi) Box Office Report, Robot (Hindi) Box Office returns, ...
