The world of Indian music has lost one of its most iconic voices. Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, affectionately known as "Asha Tai," passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday, April 12, 2026. She breathed her last at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after battling age-related health complications.

Final Hours and Medical Condition

Asha Bhosle was rushed to the hospital on Saturday, April 11, after experiencing sudden cardiac and respiratory distress. According to hospital sources and Dr. Pratit Samdani, she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in critical condition. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the veteran singer succumbed to multi-organ failure on Sunday afternoon.

Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the news to the media, stating that the family was by her side during her final moments.

Last Rites and Tributes

The news of her demise has triggered an outpouring of grief across the globe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with various film personalities and politicians, expressed their condolences, calling it an "irreparable loss to the world of art."

Public Respects: Her mortal remains will be kept at her Mumbai residence, Casa Grande in Lower Parel, on Monday, April 13, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM for fans and well-wishers to pay their final respects.

Funeral Details: The last rites will be performed with full state honors at 4:00 PM on Monday, April 13, at Shivaji Park, Mumbai.

With a career spanning over eight decades, Asha Bhosle was the definition of versatility. She began her journey in 1943 and went on to record over 12,000 songs in more than 20 Indian and foreign languages.

She was a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000) and the Padma Vibhushan (2008). In 2011, she was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the most recorded artist in music history.

From the soulful ghazals of Umrao Jaan to the high-octane cabaret of Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, and the romantic charm of Chura Liya Hai Tumne, her voice provided the soundtrack for generations of cinema lovers. Her passing marks the end of an era that she shared with her elder sister, the late Lata Mangeshkar, leaving a void in the Indian music industry that can never be filled.
