Ranbir Kapoor Confirms Double Role in Ramayana: Lord Rama vs Lord Parshurama in 6-Hour Epic

Ranbir Kapoor Confirms Double Role in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana

The Indian cinematic landscape is bracing for a shift of biblical-or rather, mythological-proportions. Following the massive global buzz of the first-look teaser released on April 2, 2026, Ranbir Kapoor has officially confirmed a major creative twist for Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: he will be portraying a double role as both Lord Rama and Lord Parshurama.

The announcement, made during a press event in Los Angeles, has sent fans into a frenzy, especially as the teaser hinted at a high-stakes confrontation between the two avatars of Vishnu.

One Actor, Two Avatars

While rumors had been swirling since the "Rama" teaser dropped, Kapoor’s confirmation adds a layer of complexity to the project. Playing two distinct incarnations of the divine-the calm, righteous Rama and the fiery, axe-wielding warrior Parshurama-is a challenge Kapoor described as "fantastic."

"Lord Vishnu had different avatars. Lord Ram is one avatar and Lord Parshuram was an avatar before him," Kapoor told Collider. "To get the opportunity to play them both was an incredible responsibility. It’s about understanding the spirituality and emotionality that separates them."

Ranbir Kapoor reportedly spent over a year preparing for the dual roles, focusing on distinct body language and voice modulation to ensure the two characters feel entirely separate on screen.

The "Lord of the Rings" Scale

Perhaps the most headline-grabbing detail is the sheer scale of the production. Kapoor and producer Namit Malhotra have explicitly compared the project to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
  • The Runtime: The epic is being shot as a two-part saga with a combined runtime of six hours.
  • The Budget: With a reported budget of $500 million (over ₹4,000 crore), it is officially the most expensive film franchise ever undertaken in India.
  • The Visuals: The film utilizes cutting-edge VFX from DNEG, aiming to blend the "creature-work of Avatar" with the "human emotion of Gladiator."

A Stellar Ensemble Cast of Ramayan

Nitesh Tiwari has assembled a "Pan-India" dream team to bring the epic to life:
  • Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita
  • Yash (of KGF fame) as the formidable Ravana
  • Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman
  • Ravie Dubey as Lakshman
  • Arun Govil (the original TV Ram) as King Dasharatha

Release Strategy

The makers are opting for a festive "event" release strategy:
  • Ramayana: Part 1 – Slated for Diwali 2026.
  • Ramayana: Part 2 – Slated for Diwali 2027.
With a soundtrack composed by the powerhouse duo of Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, Ramayana is positioning itself not just as a movie, but as India’s definitive global cultural export for the decade.
