A Smoking Controversy: "The Ba***ds of Bollywood" Faces Legal Scrutiny Over Ranbir Kapoor's Cameo

Aryan Khan's much-lauded directorial debut, "The Ba***ds of Bollywood," is at the center of a major legal controversy following a scene featuring a cameo by Ranbir Kapoor. A complaint has been filed with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding the depiction of Ranbir Kapoor using an e-cigarette, a substance banned in India, without any on-screen warnings. This has sparked a heated debate about artistic freedom, censorship, and the social responsibility of filmmakers and actors.

The scene in question appears in the series' seventh episode, where Ranbir Kapoor, playing himself, is seen casually using a vape offered to him. The complaint, filed by the Legal Rights Observatory, alleges that this portrayal could "mislead or negatively influence young viewers by promoting the use of such banned substances." The complainant also argues that the scene violates the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019, which bans the production, sale, and promotion of e-cigarettes in India.


The NHRC has taken the complaint seriously, deeming the allegations "prima facie serious and worthy of investigation." The commission has reportedly asked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Mumbai Police for an "Action Taken Report" and has even recommended that an FIR be filed against Ranbir Kapoor, the show's producers (including Red Chillies Entertainment), and the streaming platform Netflix.
