Box Office Report: 'War 2' Has a Strong but Disappointing Start

MUMBAI – The highly anticipated film War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, has had a mixed opening at the box office, with strong overall collections but a lower-than-expected performance in its core Hindi market. The film, a part of the YRF Spy Universe, faces an uphill battle to be considered a major success, especially when compared to its predecessor and its box office rival, Coolie.

Opening Day Collections

On its opening day, War 2 collected a domestic net of approximately ₹52.5 crore. The film's total worldwide gross on Day 1 was around ₹90-95 crore, with a significant portion coming from the domestic market. However, a breakdown of these numbers reveals a major concern for the film's performance in the North:

Hindi Version: The Hindi version of the film earned around ₹29 crore.

Telugu Version: The Telugu version, boosted by Jr. NTR's star power, was the saving grace, collecting a strong ₹23.25 crore.

Tamil Version: The Tamil version had a very small collection of just ₹0.25 crore.

Comparison with Other Films

Vs. War (2019):

War 2 fell short of its predecessor's opening day. The first War had an opening of ₹53 crore, with a much stronger Hindi share of ₹51 crore. The sequel's reliance on the Telugu market to reach a similar total has raised concerns.

Vs. Other YRF Spy Universe Films:

The Hindi opening of ₹29 crore for War 2 is the lowest for the franchise, trailing behind films like Pathaan (₹55 crore) and Tiger 3 (₹44.5 crore).

Vs. Coolie:

The film's biggest competition, Rajinikanth's Coolie, had a much stronger opening day, collecting a staggering ₹65 crore in India. The Tamil version of Coolie alone collected an estimated ₹45 crore, surpassing War 2's total collections across all languages.

Factors Affecting the Box Office

Mixed Reviews and Word-of-Mouth: Initial reviews and audience reactions for War 2 have been lukewarm, with many criticizing the VFX and storyline, which could impact its performance over the long holiday weekend.

Massive Budget: With a reported production budget of around ₹325 crore, War 2 faces an extremely high bar for success. According to trade analysts, it needs to collect a minimum of ₹650 crore in domestic net earnings to be declared a hit, which looks like a massive challenge given its initial performance.

The Road Ahead

While the film had a sluggish start, its second day saw a significant jump in collections due to the Independence Day holiday, with early reports suggesting a collection of around ₹46 crore. This brought the domestic total to nearly ₹98 crore and the worldwide gross to ₹79.95 crore by the end of Day 2. However, the film needs to maintain this momentum over the weekend to make up for its underwhelming Hindi opening and prove its mettle in the long run.
