The G.O.A.T. Meets Tradition: Lionel Messi Chants 'Jai Mata Di' and ‘Har Har Mahadev’ at Anant Ambani’s Vantara

In a historic moment that has bridged the worlds of global sports and Indian spirituality, football legend Lionel Messi concluded his high-profile "G.O.A.T. India Tour 2025" with a deeply personal visit to Vantara, the world-renowned wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Hosted by Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, the visit was more than just a tour of the 3,500-acre sanctuary; it became a viral sensation as the Argentine maestro was seen fully immersing himself in Sanatana Dharma traditions.

A Spiritual Side of the Legend

While Messi is known for his magic on the pitch, fans were left stunned by visuals of him participating in a Maha Aarti at the temple located within the Vantara complex. Accompanied by his Inter Miami teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul, Messi was seen with a traditional tilak on his forehead and rudraksha beads around his neck.

The highlight of the spiritual visit included:

Shiv Abhishek: Messi was filmed offering milk to a Shivling while reportedly chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" and "Har Har Mahadev."

Devotional Chants: In another viral clip, the football icon joined the Ambani family in a spirited chant of "Jai Mata Di" during the Ambe Mata Puja.

Symbolic Rituals: To mark auspicious beginnings, Messi participated in the traditional Nariyal Utsarg (coconut offering) and Matka Phod ceremonies.

Football with a Different Kind of Teammate

Beyond the rituals, Messi’s humanitarian side was on full display as he toured the rescue facilities. In a heartwarming moment that has since gone viral, Messi engaged in a "football session" with Maniklal, a rescued elephant calf. The calf’s playful response to the football legend showcased the "universal language of play" that Vantara strives to foster between humans and animals.

As a tribute to his visit, Anant and Radhika Ambani announced that a rescued lion cub at the facility has been named ‘Lionel’ in his honor.
Messi’s Message to India

Reflecting on his experience in Spanish, Messi expressed deep admiration for the work being done at the center: "What Vantara does is truly beautiful—the care the animals receive and the way they are rescued is genuinely impressive. We felt completely at ease, and it is an experience that stays with you."

Before departing, Messi took to social media to thank his Indian fans, writing, "Namaste India! Thanks for the warm welcome and all the expressions of love. I hope football has a bright future in India!"

Why the Visit Matters

For many, Messi’s participation in Hindu rituals wasn't just a photo op—it was a powerful gesture of cultural respect. Whether it was the echoes of "Har Har Mahadev" or the sight of him feeding giraffes and elephants, the visit served as a perfect finale to a tour that celebrated both the "G.O.A.T." of football and the rich heritage of India.
