Faith and Resilience: PM Modi Leads Grand Roadshow as Somnath Marks 75 Years of Restoration
Prabhas Patan, Gujarat - May 11, 2026

The historic coastal town of Prabhas Patan was bathed in saffron and spirituality on Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a massive 1.5-km roadshow to celebrate the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav. The event marks exactly 75 years since the restored Somnath Temple-a symbol of India's civilisational resilience-was inaugurated by the country’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in 1951.

Thousands of locals and devotees from across the country lined the streets from the helipad to the Veer Hamirji Circle. The air was thick with the sound of Vedic chants and "Jai Somnath" slogans as the Prime Minister’s convoy moved slowly through the crowds. Adding a touch of "Mini India" to the festivities, folk artists from as far as West Bengal performed traditional dances at various stages along the route.

A Confluence of Rituals and Tradition

Following the vibrant roadshow, the Prime Minister, who also serves as the Chairman of the Shree Somnath Trust, entered the inner sanctum of the temple to perform the Vishesh Maha Puja. Clad in traditional attire, he participated in the elaborate Kumbhabhishek ceremony, a sacred ritual where holy water-collected from major pilgrimage sites across India-was sprinkled over the temple’s towering spire.

The atmosphere reached a spiritual crescendo during the Dhvajarohan (flag hoisting) ceremony. As the Prime Minister hoisted the sacred flag atop the temple, Indian Air Force helicopters showered flower petals over the shrine, while the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team performed a stunning flypast, trailing the colors of the Indian tricolour in the sky.

"Today, I am reliving that moment which Dr. Rajendra Prasad Ji must have experienced during the consecration of the reconstructed temple," PM Modi shared in a heartfelt post. "Somnath is not just a temple; it is a symbol of India's unconquerable spirit."

Commemorating 75 Years of "Vikas and Virasat"

The Amrut Mahotsav is not just a religious milestone but a celebration of India's journey since Independence. To mark the 75th anniversary, the Prime Minister released a commemorative ₹75 coin and a special postage stamp featuring the iconic temple architecture.

The celebrations also highlight the "Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi" (Development along with Heritage) approach. The temple complex now features a state-of-the-art museum and exhibition chronicling the shrine's history-from its repeated destruction over centuries to its final, glorious restoration led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Looking Ahead

Addressing a massive public gathering at the Sadbhavana Ground later in the day, the Prime Minister urged the youth to connect with their roots. He announced that special pujas would continue at the temple for the next 1,000 days to honor its 1,000-year history of standing firm against adversity.

As the sun set over the Arabian Sea, the temple was illuminated in a dazzling light-and-sound display, leaving the thousands gathered with a profound sense of pride in India’s enduring spiritual legacy.
