PM Modi’s 7 Appeals for Economic Self-Reliance: Gold, WFH, and Travel Curbs Explained

National Interest Over Comfort: PM Modi Issues ‘7 Appeals’ as Global Oil Shock Hits $105

New Delhi, May 11, 2026 - With the shadow of the US-Iran conflict looming over global markets and crude oil prices breaching the critical $105-per-barrel mark, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a direct, emotional appeal to the citizens of India. Invoking the spirit of discipline seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, the PM yesterday issued "7 Appeals" aimed at safeguarding the national economy and achieving emergency self-reliance.

Speaking from Secunderabad, the Prime Minister framed the current global instability not just as a government challenge, but as a test of "Economic Patriotism" for every Indian household.

The 7 Appeals for a Resilient India

The Prime Minister’s strategy focuses on two fronts: drastically reducing domestic fuel consumption and plugging the drain of foreign exchange.
  • Reviving Work-From-Home (WFH): In a move reminiscent of 2020, PM Modi urged businesses to prioritize remote work and virtual meetings wherever possible to slash the daily demand for petrol and diesel.
  • A One-Year Sabbatical on Gold: Highlighting that India spends approximately $72 billion annually on gold imports, he requested citizens to pause non-essential purchases of the "yellow metal" to preserve forex for essential energy needs.
  • Judicious Fuel Use: He appealed to the public to embrace metros, public transport, and carpooling, urging a "Nation First" approach over personal comfort.
  • Cutting Cooking Oil Consumption: To reduce the import bill of edible oils and improve public health, the PM asked households to consciously moderate their usage.
  • Shifting Away from Chemical Fertilizers: He called on the farming community to reduce the use of imported urea by 50% and move toward natural farming.
  • "No" to Foreign Travel & Destination Weddings: In perhaps his most debated appeal, the PM suggested a one-year freeze on overseas vacations and "destination weddings" abroad, urging the middle class to support domestic tourism instead.
  • Adopting ‘Swadeshi’: Strengthening the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, he emphasized choosing indigenous products over foreign brands to keep Indian capital within the country.

The Macroeconomic Stakes

The stakes are undeniably high. As the world’s third-largest oil importer, India is uniquely vulnerable to the current blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which facilitates nearly 20% of the world's oil flow.

By curbing non-essential spending—specifically gold and foreign travel—the government estimates it can save enough foreign exchange to stabilize the Rupee and cushion the blow of rising energy costs.

"In this time of global crisis, we must make a resolution keeping duty paramount," PM Modi stated. "What is the importance of energy security? Every person in the world is feeling it today. We must prepare ourselves."

Mixed Reactions and Industry Support

While industry leaders have largely rallied behind the Prime Minister, praising the "austerity measures" as necessary to avoid fuel rationing, the political opposition has been critical. Congress leaders described the appeals as "shifting the burden" onto common citizens rather than building governmental contingencies.

Regardless of the political back-and-forth, the message is clear: the government is bracing for a long-drawn global conflict, and it is asking 1.4 billion Indians to be its first line of defense.
