Get the full story on the conflict currently shaking Bollywood.
MUMBAI — The high-stakes world of Bollywood has been shaken by an escalating standoff between one of its biggest stars and the industry’s most powerful labor federation. At the center of the storm is the long-gestating Don 3, a project that has now morphed from a highly anticipated franchise reboot into a legal and professional quagmire.
Earlier this week, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) took the rare and drastic step of issuing a "non-cooperation directive" against actor Ranveer Singh. The move, effectively a professional blacklist, comes following a complaint filed by Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment regarding Singh’s sudden departure from the film.
The Claim: Three Requests Ignored
The catalyst for the FWICE’s public condemnation, according to their chief advisor Ashoke Pandit, was a persistent lack of communication from the star.
"We very strongly tried our best. We sent him invitations thrice," Pandit told reporters during a press conference on Monday. The federation claims that despite multiple attempts to bring both parties to the table to resolve what they view as an "industry dispute," the actor remained unreachable.
The standoff finally broke on May 23-but not with a meeting. According to the federation, it was only after word of an impending press conference leaked that an email arrived from Singh’s team. In it, the actor’s representative reportedly argued that the dispute was a private contractual matter and therefore fell outside the FWICE’s jurisdiction.
For the federation, the rejection was a breaking point. "When a federation invites you for a discussion, you cannot simply say it is not our domain," Pandit retorted. "A superstar is not bigger than the law."
The Producer’s Perspective
Behind the scenes, Excel Entertainment-led by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani-has alleged that Singh’s exit was not merely a creative decision, but a move that caused significant financial damage. Sources suggest the production house is seeking ₹45 crore in compensation, citing extensive pre-production costs, including location and travel logistics for hundreds of workers, all of which were incurred based on the actor's initial commitment.
The Actor’s Stance: "Dignity and Maturity"
On Monday evening, following the federation's announcement, Ranveer Singh’s team issued a carefully worded statement. Maintaining the silence he has held for months, the actor expressed "the highest regard" for the film fraternity.
"Throughout the recent developments surrounding Don 3, he has consciously chosen to maintain silence, believing that professional discussions and personal equations are best handled with dignity, maturity and mutual respect," the statement read. His team reiterated that the actor has no interest in fueling public "conjecture" and remains focused on his upcoming work commitments.
A Legal Gray Area
While the FWICE’s directive sends a powerful message, legal experts warn that the federation may be treading on thin ice. Since the dispute involves a commercial contract between an independent actor and a production house, many analysts point out that the FWICE lacks the statutory authority to impose binding legal consequences.
"Any action adverse to a person must follow the principle of hearing the other side," one legal observer noted, highlighting that the "ban" could be vulnerable to challenge if it infringes on the actor’s professional rights without due process.
As it stands, the "non-cooperation" directive means that members of the 32 craft unions under the FWICE-including technicians, lightmen, and set workers-have been instructed to pause any association with projects involving Singh. Whether this pressure will force the actor into a sit-down meeting or push the conflict further into the courts remains to be seen.
For now, the industry watches on, caught between the power of a labor body and the autonomy of its biggest stars.
