The 41-year-old actress plays Dalbir Kaur, the sister of the late Sarabjit Singh, who was captured by Pakistan in 1991 and tried on charges of terrorism in 2013.

Ash is yet to meet the real Dalbir, whose tireless campaign seeking the release of her brother had grabbed headlines. Though the film is Sarabjit's story, it will be told through the eyes of his sister.

Thanks to her efforts and that of the Indian government, Sarabjit's execution was indefinitely delayed. But he was attacked on April 26, 2013 in the Central Jail Lahore and on May 1, was declared brain dead. The following day, he was reported to have died at 12.45 am, and his body was flown back to India where a second autopsy revealed that his vital organs were missing and his skull was broken into two.

The biopic features Randeep Hooda in the titular role, Richa Chadha as his wife and Darshan Kumar, who grabbed eyeballs with his debut turn in the Mary Kom biopic, plays a Pakistani lawyer.

While the film's schedule is set to shift to Mumbai before the year end for three-four days, its Punjab schedule will commence next year. Mirror was the first to report that 'Aligarh' helmer Hansal Mehta was to direct the biopic with Kangana Ranaut in the role of Dalbir Kaur initially (May 8).

The project eventually landed in Omung Kumar's lap thanks to the critical and commercial success of his directorial debut Mary Kom, for which he also won the National Award last year.

'Sarbjit' is set to hit the marquee next May, next year. Plans are afoot to take it to the annual Cannes International Film Festival.
