Meiyang Chang To host Nomination Special at IIFA Awards 2010 in Colombo

Former Indian Idol contestant Meiyang Chang, who recently made his Bollywood debut in Badmaash Company, will be on the green carpet hosting the nomination special at IIFA 2010.

The dentist-turned-singer-turned-actor has bagged a soccer-based reality show for ESPN. “My focus has shifted from singing after Indian Idol 3, which is not surprising because it was always a hobby,” he says candidly.

Following protests by Tamilians outside his home, Pratiksha, Amitabh Bachchan, if rumours are to be believed, will not be flying to Colombo in June despite being IIFA’s brand ambassador. Wizcraft, organiser of the event, however, continue to say that he will be there but Mani Ratnam, for sure, has pulled out his next, Raavan, that was supposed to be unveiled there.

Salman Khan is on the star guest list but his “busy schedule” could give him an excuse to drop out of the event that South stars like Rajnikant and Kamal Haasan have already boycotted because of the venue. Amidst all these controversies, ex-Indian Idol contestant Meiyang Chang, who recently made his Bollywood debut in Badmaash Company, insists that he will be on the green carpet hosting the nomination special at IIFA.

Quiz him on acting and he says that he was approached for Roshan Abbas’ Red Chilies production, Always Kabhi Kabhi, when Yash Raj Films offered him Badmaash Company with which he stepped into Bollywood. Having grown up on movies, he’s made the transition and has got many offers since, including a film on the China-Tibet conflict whose screenplay is still being written.

He recalls his first day on the shoot. “There was an eight-hour delay. Anushka (Sharma) and I struggled to can a montage. After a while, I told her she was looking good. She didn’t respond. I decided that she was starry but changed my mind later,” he says.

“Shahid (Kapoor) is more reserved.” Chang, some day, wants to compile his blogs into a book. In his school days, he sketched comic books as well. “I want to complete a corny love story,” he laughs.

Meiyang Chang with Girl Friend Monali Thakur

Talking of love reminds us of Monali Thakur whom he met during Indian Idol. He insists it wasn’t love-at-first-sight: “We met a few times over. Then, I went away for over a month for the IPL last year. That’s when I started missing her.”
